About the Position

A Senior Data Scientist uses advanced techniques that integrate traditional and non-traditional datasets to develop analytical solutions and deliver business insights for the management, planning and optimization of University of Phoenix operations, strategies and student learning. A Senior Data Scientist applies advanced statistical methods, machine learning, and optimization techniques to produce solutions and insights that enable customer-facing and strategical decision-making applications. A Senior Data Scientist takes the lead on solving complex business problems and translates the results to the management and stakeholders

What You’ll Do

1. Translate ambiguous business questions and concerns into specific quantitative questions that can be answered with available data and resolve problems in business planning, management and optimization projects that are consistent with the University’s mission and business agenda/needs.


2. Design, develop and program methods to consolidate and analyze unstructured, diverse big data sources to generate predictive/descriptive models and actionable insights for operations management in student services, enrollment services and academics.


3. Research and apply the following areas of advanced methods to develop solution products for complicate problems in end-to-end business processes:


Statistical Interference/Analysis/Modeling

Machine learning and Natural Language Processing

Artificial Intelligence

Algorithms

Data Mining and Modeling

Big Data Query


4. Design, coordinate and execute pilots or proof of concepts to evaluate the new initiatives, technologies and frameworks which have prospective business value.


5. Lead complex analyses to better understand customers’ behavior, engagement and academic outcome by using advanced statistical and machine learning techniques including regression, tree-based models and natural language processing.


6. Collaborate with various cross-functional teams (project managers, data engineers and business analysts) to deploy data science solution and utilize the insights and recommendations generated by the analytical models.


7. Drive both short term and long-term volume forecasts into the planning exercise for investment decisions with finance and the leadership team. Create optimal short-term plans for business by managing trade-offs between Students Experience/Service Levels, Employee Experience, and Cost Effectiveness.


8. Propose and design compelling and effective data visualizations for reports, presentations and analytical products to highlight key insights, relationships among features and research findings.


9. Communicate project results internally and externally ensure reports are created using credible qualitative and quantitative methodologies; advise management and project stakeholders on appropriate/recommended course of action based on final model output.


10. Evaluate the effectiveness of new data sources and the practicality of the new analytics platform


11. Maintain and increase professional and technical knowledge and currency via self-research on latest techniques which can build useful predictive and optimization models.


12. Perform other duties as assigned or apparent.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Master's degree in a quantitative field such as statistics, computer science, mathematics, economics, or finance


  • Three (3) years of professional experience as a Data Scientist, Operations Research, Business or Data Analyst, or related work in mathematical statistical model building for business operations management, including proven experience and strong proficiency with SQL, Excel and SAS, R or Python, as well as strong profiency in statistical modeling and machine learning software (such as AWS SageMaker, SAS Enterprise Guide, SAS Enterprise Miner, R studio, and Jupyter notebook), as well as experience with cloud computing environments (such as AWS, Azure, or GCP)


  • Deep business understanding including potential impact of business decisions on various internal external stakeholders and systems


  • Strong analytical ability in problem deconstruction, statistical thinking, meticulous analysis, data validation, and scientific rigor.


  • Experience leading data analyses from start to finish and landing actionable insights and production scenarios.

Pay Range

The annual pay range for this position is $80000 (minimum), $100000 (midpoint), and $134800 (maximum).*

  • Typical hiring range is between the minimum and midpoint of the above pay range. Actual starting base pay may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, location and budget.
