Job Description

Kite Viral Vector Downstream Process Development is seeking for highly motivated Sr Process Engineer to join our team in Santa Monica. The Sr Process Engineer will provide technical leadership for viral vector downstream process development and characterization to support clinical and commercial manufacturing. As the Sr Process Engineer, the individual will work and collaborate with Upstream, Analytical, Formulation, Drug Product and MSAT teams to support ongoing pipeline products. The Sr Process Engineer may have direct reports and/or matrix management opportunities. The responsibilities also include being program team leader to advance innovations and CMC activities/milestones.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategize, design and implement downstream process development studies to support viral vector clinical and commercial manufacturing process
  • Perform filtration operations, chromatographic separations, and in-process analytical testing in support of vector process development and characterization
  • Responsible for end-to-end process analysis and trend process performance. Provide frequent updates to leadership
  • Responsible for process development and characterization documentation such as authoring technical reports, process descriptions, process control strategy and process related documents
  • Technology transfer of clinical and/or commercial process
  • Collaborate with Upstream, Analytical, Formulation, Drug Product and MSAT team to support ongoing pipeline products
  • Participate and influence the cross functional team to advance CMC activities
  • Manage matrix team or direct reports. Mentor junior staff
  • Maintain familiarity with scientific literature and applies appropriately to research projects

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology or a related scientific discipline with 6+ years of experience or
  • MS degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology or a related scientific discipline with 4+ years or
  • PhD degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology or a related scientific discipline with 0+ years of experience or
  • High School diploma with 11+ years of experience in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology or a related scientific discipline

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in downstream unit operations such as harvest, chromatography, TFF and depth/absolute filtration
  • Demonstrated knowledge of process design, optimization and characterization for early to late-stage programs
  • Experience in process modeling, DOE and statistical analysis using JMP SAS or equivalent
  • Familiar with CMC Quality module
  • Ability to think critically and demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated, deep sense of responsibility, and willing to accept temporary responsibilities outside of initial job description.
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining and advancing a culture of safety within work and laboratory settings
  • Ability to work and collaborate in cross functional teams, research, development, manufacturing in a fast pace, dynamic team setting
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal, written communication skills and interpersonal skills

The salary range for this position is: $117,725.00 - $152,350.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
