SRNL Scientist (R&D) S3

Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is a multi-program laboratory applying state of the art science and practical, high-value, cost-effective solutions to complex technical problems to protect the nation. Located at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS) in Aiken SC, the laboratory develops and deploys innovative technologies to address some of the nation’s environmental, energy, and national security challenges.

SRNL Global Security Directorate leverages several areas of unique expertise and capability in nuclear material science and operations, nuclear processing activities, arms control subject-matter experts, and others.

SRNL supports NNSA Nonproliferation, Arms Control, and Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation R&D missions. In efforts to strengthen nonproliferation and arms control regimes, to prevent proliferation, ensure peaceful nuclear uses, and enable verifiable nuclear reductions. For example, SRNL is a leader in developing and manufacturing technologies and their implementation to generate unique nuclear material particulates intended for use by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

These efforts are primarily sponsored by the NNSA Nonproliferation Arms Control office and represent the maturation of R&D technologies at SRNL over the past five years.

The Nuclear Nonproliferation Division is seeking a research and development (R&D) scientist with experience in at least one of the fields of

1) inorganic chemical separation and purification.

2) aerosol chemistry and science.

3) actinide material science.

4) spray pyrolysis or spray drying synthesis methods.

The successful candidate will be the lead technical R&D scientist responsible for execution of multiple R&D projects. The generation of new related proposal concepts, with focus on the generation and characterization of engineered microparticles, for a variety of NNSA missions.

This staff scientist will be responsible for the following:
  • Serve as the lead technical R&D scientist for a team of scientists, chemical engineers, and postdoctoral researchers to complete tasks and deliverables for various R&D projects
  • Assist with work scope execution for team members, plus a willingness to mentor and train junior staff
  • Be the SRNL point of contact for project sponsor
  • Lead and participate in feedstock production and generation of particles from feedstock material
  • Write monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports requested by project sponsor
  • Develop presentations and manuscripts for peer-reviewed articles for various R&D projects
  • Perform routine maintenance functions to maintain equipment for various R&D projects
  • Perform hands-on work in both clean and radiological laboratories
  • Establish and maintain communication between all levels of supervision and management

Basic Education Qualifications

BS in Chemistry, Nuclear Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, plus 10 years of relative work experience after your graduation.

MS in Chemistry, Nuclear Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, plus 8 years of relative work experience after your graduation.

  • A track record of peer-reviewed publications, patents, conference abstracts, and other external public technical proceedings.
  • Experience with motivating a team to ensure tasks and deliverables are met while maintaining good quality standards
  • Experience with seeking external funding for R&D projects at DOE national laboratories.
Other Required Qualifications

Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in Chemistry, Nuclear Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry plus five years of relative work experience after your graduation

Track record of peer-reviewed publications, patents, conference abstracts, and other external public technical proceedings.

Experience with motivating a team to ensure tasks and deliverables are met while maintaining good quality standards.

Experience with seeking external funding for R&D projects at DOE national laboratories.
