DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, Provide significant scientific contribution to the lab by developing and leading a project that conduct experiments in cell signaling and characterize interactions involving growth factors and other proteins in the fields of cancer and neuronal biology. Independently perform experiments making technical determinations and/or observations related to research projects. Independently perform PCR, cell-based assays, cell culture, protein blotting, and flow cytometry. Independently conduct limited variety of standard and non-standard procedures. Conduct animal experiments with both mice and rats including histology, staining, and immunohistochemistry. Data processing and presentation and statistical analysis. Assist in the preparation of data for publication. Contribute to lab administration, compliance, and maintenance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong theoretical knowledge as required in a Bachelor's degree in biomedical or a related science. Preferred with two or more years of recent, directly related work experience.

  • Proven experience and ability to initiate and maintain multiple different eukaryotic cell lines including freezing, thawing, storage, and plating cells in preparation for experiments. Experience with sterile techniques, trouble shooting of contamination problems, and care of incubators and liquid nitrogen freezers.

  • Strong theoretical knowledge of molecular biology techniques and genetics and experience in extracting DNA/RNA, PCR, PT-PCR, qPCR.

  • Proven experience in protein chemistry/purification, gel electrophoresis and transfers, various gel and membrane stains, western blots, and densitometry and analysis on resulting data.

  • Demonstrated experience with immunohistochemistry.

  • Histology processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining.

  • Proven experience with mouse and rat handling, surgeries, anesthesia, injections, euthanasia, and tissue harvest.

  • Knowledge of bio, chemical, and radiation safety techniques and practices. Demonstrated ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines and implement measures to ensure compliance and maintain associated records.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills over a wide range of situations and individuals needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment in person, on the phone, and in writing to a diverse population; including persons from foreign countries, the business community, academicians, students and staff with a high degree of diplomacy, mature judgment, tact, and flexibility.

  • Strong knowledge of proper formats, grammar, and spelling in English and proofreading ability sufficient to compose, edit, and publish professional correspondence as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend, discuss, and present research materials.

  • Experience making independent decisions, analyzing situations, problem solving, and initiating action for laboratory maintenance. Proven ability to work independently.

  • Strong organizational skills to order and maintain lab reagents and supplies, and keep accurate lab records and computer files. Experience in ordering, maintaining, trouble-shooting, and calibrating general laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifuges, incubators, microscopes, water baths, etc.).

  • Proficient experience with the operation of a personal computer and software applications, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access), Photoshop, Acrobat.

  • Experience with gel/blot imaging and microscopic imaging techniques for both fluorescence and bright field applications and with digital histology image software assisted image processing and analysis.

  • Willingness to learn new theory, techniques, and tasks and share knowledge.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with UCSD ordering, EH&S, and facilities policies and business systems.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $62,324 - $100,220 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $29.85 - $48.00

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
