About the Position: The Property and Evidence Custodian (PEC) interacts with laboratory management (supervisors, managers, division commander), all technical and/or administrative personnel, customers, including law enforcement agencies, attorneys, medical examiners and coroners... This position provides expert evidence management and is responsible for the receipt, accessioning, storage and disposition of evidence submitted to the Toxicology Laboratory Division for forensic toxicology testing. About the Division: The Washington State Toxicology Laboratory Division (TLD) established in 1963, performs drug and alcohol testing for coroners, medical examiners, law enforcement agencies, prosecuting attorneys, and the State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) in all 39 Washington counties. The Division receives approximately 16,000 cases per year of which approximately 65 percent are law enforcement DUI cases and 35 percent coroner/medical examiner cases. The Division is overseen by the State Toxicologist/Division Commander/Assistant Division Commander and has a staff of 44 personnel consisting of Management, Forensic Scientist Supervisors, Forensic Scientists, Quality Assurance Personnel, Property and Evidence Custodians, and Administrative Personnel. Partnering with our communities helps the WSP provide the best in public safety services now and into the future.Responsibilities: • Process evidence by receiving and releasing evidence to representatives from law enforcement agencies. • Receive physical evidence • Assign case numbers and creates electronic case files in database • Completes chain of custody • Enter evidence data into the computerized laboratory database. • Store evidence appropriately • Release evidence to forensic scientists • Release evidence back to submitting agencies • Disposal of evidence as required via WSP procedures • Maintain case files and all evidence transaction records. • Conduct periodic inventories and audits of evidence. • Provide administrative support • Other duties as assigned. Tools and Equipment: General office equipment, office and laboratory software, and personal protective equipment and supplies. Travel Requirements: Travel throughout the state may be required for training and meetings or evidence transport to/from the Federal Way Toxicology Laboratory. Transportation is by pool car or other approved means such as air travel if necessary. Work Setting/ Hazards: The working environment is a Toxicology Laboratory where hazardous and biohazardous chemicals and evidence must be safely handled following safety guidelines. Must be willing and able to work on cases involving traumatic events. Schedule: Eight-hour workdays Monday through Friday are typical. Hours may be flexible upon approval of management. Customer Interactions: Interact with medical examiners, coroners, attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and representatives of the various courier services. Must maintain confidentiality and professionalism.Required Qualifications: • High school diploma/ GED • Must possess a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver's License or able to obtain one within 30 days of employment. Conditions of Employment: • Successful completion of a pre-employment polygraph examination and background investigation. • Provide an oral DNA sample to be used in the CODIS Elimination Profile Index.
