Strategic Communications Assistant

The University of Maryland Athletics Department is seeking qualified applications for the position of Strategic Communications Assistant. The position will work as a member of the Strategic Communications and Content Development unit.

Responsibilities: Among the tasks, the Strategic Communications Assistants will be charged with include:

• Primary media relations contacts for selected sports as assigned (sports could include: women's soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, and softball). The individuals will be responsible for team media coverage, press releases, game notes, in-game stat keeping, statistical updates, game coverage, social media, writing features and recaps and updating of the umterps.com website.
• Additional duties could include:
  • Serving as a contributing writer, which would entail writing feature stories and human-interest pieces for umterps.com and One Maryland Magazine, as well as writing recaps for various sports. They will post stories on umterps.com, the One Maryland App and social media.
  • Serving as a social media assistant, responsible for ideating, developing and posting social media content for various Maryland accounts and platforms. Assisting with the compilation of social media data and analytics reports.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required in journalism, communications or related field. Candidates must have outstanding writing, strategic communications and interpersonal skills as well as strong knowledge of social media and digital platforms. They should be proficient with desktop publishing and statistical (Statcrew, Genius) software. Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends and available to travel.

Candidates with previous experience using SIDEARM Sports for website posting and experience with Genius for soccer and volleyball and StatCrew for softball will be given priority.

Preferred experience as a media contact for two years in college or professional athletics.

Compensation: This position will be paid at an hourly rate of $18 with the potential to earn overtime pay. Cumulative pay between $36,000-$40,000 for 12 months. This position does not include benefits.

Availability: Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The position runs through June 30, 2024, with a potential for renewal at the end of the first year.
