Scientist l/ll- Cement

Sublime Systems is a technology company commercializing affordable, ultra-low-carbon cement. Sublime's breakthrough replaces the industry's legacy fossil fuel-fired kilns with an electrochemical system that operates at ambient temperature, eliminating the use of fossil fuel and the need for limestone, resulting in low-carbon, low-embodied energy cement. This technology has the potential to drive gigaton-scale CO2 reductions in an industry responsible for 8 percent of global emissions. Sublime is backed by mission-aligned investors, including The Engine, Prime Impact Fund, Energy Impact Partners, and Lowercarbon Capital. We are building a diverse and collaborative team of folks who are "amped about cement" (pun intended), who share our values (excellence, creativity, and teamwork), and our motivation to create a better world.

Sublime is seeking a Scientist l/II to contribute to the development of our decarbonized cement. This Scientist l/II will be responsible for conducting research to improve the performance of Sublime Cement through literature reviews, designing experiments, performing hand-on characterization and testing in lab, analyzing and interpreting data, and communicating results. The Scientist II will also contribute their expertise to help set technical priorities and research strategy, plan and prioritize experiments, and contribute to the successful operation of our shared laboratory.

  • Performing lab experiments including cement property measurements, analyzing data, and presenting results
  • Devising and implementing strategies to improve cement performance
  • Prioritizing and organizing the team’s research activities
  • Contributing to the development of Sublime’s technology through literature reviews and informational interviews with industry experts
  • Writing white papers, reports, and patent applications
  • Championing safety, especially in the development of experimental processes
  • Fostering a supportive, inclusive, innovative, and dynamic company culture

Requirements Include:
  • B.S or M.S  in civil engineering, materials science, materials chemistry, or a related field
  • 2+ years of practical industry experience
  • Academic, government, or industrial research and/or product development experience in cement, SCMs, admixtures, or related materials
  • Ability to select, design, and/or apply tools and techniques to measure cement’s key physical and chemical properties
  • Ability to use physical and chemical characterization techniques for cement materials such as laser diffraction, TGA, XRF, XRD, optical microscopy, and/or SEM
  • Experience applying ASTM standard testing methods for cement materials
  • Knowledge of statistical methods including design of experiments is preferred
  • Strong presentation and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all team members
  • Organizational acumen to organize and prioritize research efforts
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, focusing on accuracy and quality, without losing sight of the bigger picture
