Tech Lead, Flickr Foundation

About the Flickr Foundation

If we imagine 100 years from now, the tens of billions of pictures currently held in Flickr could be in something similar to the public domain. Today, we have an opportunity to begin the work to preserve those pictures and their stories and interconnections for the very long term. Imagine how a wildly successful Flickr Foundation could help ensure, by example, that the Commons of the future is the one we need and want.

About the role

The Flickr Foundation is new. We want to be a foundation that makes things, instead of just talking about things. That's why the Tech Lead is one of our first hires. We are looking for an experienced developer who is looking for an exciting high-impact challenge to design and develop the long-term accessibility of the Flickr collection.

You will:

  • Develop a long-term outlook for the engineering ethos of the organization through collaboration, experimentation, and conversation
  • Create software and documentation of interactive demos, robust toys, and durable public tools for the Flickr Foundation, often building upon or extending the Flickr API and integrating with other relevant online services
  • Research and develop decentralized archiving approaches
  • Liaise with the flickr.com engineering team and other project partners
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to build and grow the team
  • Be a public representative of the Flickr Foundation, its initiatives and purpose
  • Outreach to private tech community around digital public infrastructure and digital cultural heritage
  • Participate in fundraising and grant-giving activities
  • Ensure partners and collaborators feel supported by building community through consistency and excellent communication
  • Create and run your own to-do list within the group

You have:

  • Commitment to co-create a positive community of supportive accomplice culture through your demonstrated commitment to and belief in diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Significant demonstrable experience building large-scale server-based web applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills
  • Passion for participating in a culture of continual learning and improvement
  • An understanding that reasonable solutions become great through collaboration and refining scope and requirements over time
  • Experience with REST APIs, both as a consumer and publisher
  • Experience building software as a service (SaaS) platforms
  • An ability to explain the risks and trade-offs inherent in different approaches when proposing solutions
  • Experience sharing knowledge and mentoring peers
  • Comfort interpreting and visualizing data and using it to influence decisions
  • Experience identifying root causes of failures and implementing solutions to prevent their reoccurrence
  • Experience working with AWS services

You can expect:

  • A high degree of trust and creative freedom in a small organization with a kind heart and big ideas,
  • A startup atmosphere exploring a new paradigm with big and small international collaborators,
  • World-class benefits and excellent health/medical cover (for employed team members).

Compensation
£90-105k / US$130-140k commensurate with experience, plus benefits.
We use Remote to manage international employment and localised benefits.

Work Location & Environment
London preferred, hybrid fine, remote considered.
But, remote will only be considered in a timezone that has at least 5 hours of overlap with London, UK, because that's where we've opened a small office.

Application Information
Please submit your CV/resume and a short (one-page) cover letter which expresses why you are interested in this position by June 21, 2023.

Equal opportunity
The 501(c)(3) Flickr Foundation is an equal opportunities employer, and we continue to educate ourselves on how we can improve. Humans from any nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and identity are welcome.

We see and celebrate the importance of a safe and accepting working environment that only a diverse team can unlock. We work to address our underlying biases that can stop that from happening. The photographs on Flickr and our projects and partners come from across the globe, and we aim to reflect the same diversity on multiple levels in our team and with our partners.

(Thank you to Dark Matter Labs for giving us permission to riff on their Equal Opportunities statement.)
