We are looking for a Technician II Mine Surveyor to join the Rio Tinto Kennecott Mine Survey Team, which supports the successful implementation of the 30-day mine plan. This is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to develop their survey and technical skills that go with mining deep pit slopes within one of the world’s most iconic mines.

Reporting to the Senior Engineer and working in a collaborative community, and a challenging and exciting environment, you will be:

  • Supporting the Mine Technical Team by gathering and interpreting survey data using a variety of methods and leading survey, mapping, and imaging technologies
  • Collecting data using remotely operated vehicles and performing associated data processing
  • Updating and maintaining mine survey data including topographic surfaces and infrastructure maps
  • Collecting wall performance data and producing design compliance reports
  • Verifying equipment GPS data using field survey techniques
  • Completing down hole surveys of drill holes targeting underground workings
  • Assisting teams in continuous improvement projects

What you’ll bring

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Degree in Surveying or Geomatic Sciences preferred; or 5+ years of experience in Mining
  • Strong computer competency (including Microsoft Office Suite) and comfortable with learning new software programs such as 3D drafting platforms
  • Database management skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Problem solving and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to work independently, often in remote areas and inclement weather conditions
  • Ability to lift and carry 50lbs unassisted

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Experience with remotely operated vehicles and/or FAA-certified drone pilot
  • Coordinate system conversion techniques
  • Experience with Trimble GNSS systems and data collectors
  • Familiarity with photogrammetry principles
  • Experience operating laser scanners
  • 3D printing exposure
  • Familiarity with Bentley ContextCapture, ArcMap GIS, and Maptek PointStudio software
  • Familiarity with Hexagon mining software MineSight 3D and/or Maptek Vulcan

Where you’ll be working

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery. It’s located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903. It’s one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
