Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Engineering Division has an opening for a UHV Cleaning Facilities Technician to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will provide multifunctional technical support, applying engineering, scientific, or other technical concepts and practices across Laboratory Divisions in UHV Cleaning and Plating. You’ll contribute to various Lab projects within a specified area of discipline using various methods in accordance with Lab objectives to solve routine problems in creative and effective ways.
What You Will Do:
- Set-up, operate and maintain standard chemical cleaning, rinse, etch, and plating processes and equipment.
- Change and make up new solutions for plating and cleaning baths.
- Operate and maintain the wastewater treatment unit linked to the Ultra-High Vacuum Cleaning Facility.
- Organize, document and maintain the inventory and storage of chemical products. Contribute to the implementation of procedures for handling chemical waste.
- Work from prints, drawings, sketches, and/or verbal instructions, assist in component cleaning tasks and in the performance of other chemical processing duties related to work requests made of the UHV Facility.
- Document procedures, in-process notes, and final results of assignments using the JobBOSS ERP system.
- General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases and word processors.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
- General mechanical drafting and design-documentation skills including computer-aided design.
What is Required:
Level 2
- 2 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Set-up, operate and maintain standard chemical cleaning, rinse, etch, and plating processes and equipment.
- Change and make up new solutions for plating and cleaning baths.
- Operate and maintain the wastewater treatment unit linked to the Ultra-High Vacuum Cleaning Facility.
- Organize, document and maintain the inventory and storage of chemical products. Contribute to implementation of procedures for handling chemical waste.
- Work from prints, drawings, sketches, and/or verbal instructions, assist in component cleaning tasks and in the performance of other chemical processing duties related to work requests made of the UHV Facility.
- Computer skills including use of office suite software for documentation of procedures/ processes.
- Knowledge of mechanical equipment design procedures and techniques.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret blueprints, sketches, parts lists, layout and assembly drawings.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50 lbs.).
- Valid driver’s license.
Level 3 (In Addition to the Requirements of Level 2):
- 4 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Advanced knowledge of usage and disposal of chemical products and waste
- Advanced knowledge of metal finishing processes, chemical processing equipment design, procedures and techniques.
- Advanced technical experience and understanding of cleaning and plating process theory and work practices and basic scientific and engineering principles.
- Advanced knowledge, demonstrated skills and work experience in performing highly complex set-ups, testing, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, operation and maintenance of highly sophisticated mechanical, shop related, and scientific apparatus, equipment and systems.
Desired Qualifications:
- Technical or Professional level certification in Chemical Hygiene/Waste Management.
Salary:
The Mechanical Engineering Technician (Level 2) position is expected to pay $36.17 - $39.84 per hour, which fits within the full range of $32.51 - $47.15 per hour for the position. The hourly wage for this position will commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
The Mechanical Engineering Technician (Level 3) position is expected to pay $43.97 - $48.41, which fits within the full salary range of $39.52 - $57.30 for the position. The hourly wage for this position will commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

- This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid).
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
- This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
