Mechanical Design Associate

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Engineering Division has an opening for a Mechanical Design Associate to join the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Mechanical Engineering team.

Working at the ALS is an exciting opportunity to be a part of cutting-edge scientific research and engineering innovation in synchrotron x-ray science. This is an exciting position where you will be working with a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians to support world class research efforts across a variety of disciplines. You will be working with, developing, and troubleshooting equipment operating under unique environments and will develop the skills to help the ALS achieve its scientific goals. You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with ALS staff and manage R&D projects independently.

The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract nearly 1,700 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our team!

In this exciting role, you will execute complete technical or mechanical design projects, operational assignments, or major objectives within the framework of a particular phase of scientific inquiry or applied technology. Under consultation, you will utilize combined and varied technical knowledge and design skills translating mechanical engineering and scientific concepts into special applications requiring unique methods, techniques, procedures or processes.

What You Will Do:

  • Apply technical expertise and knowledge of basic engineering/scientific concepts and practices to provide multifunctional mechanical engineering design.
  • Originate, evaluate, and prove mechanical engineering design concepts where the solution of technical problems is required and professional expertise is necessary.
  • Consult with program and project team members to focus on the specifications, form, and function of the design.
  • Collaborate on the definition of functional requirements and evaluate alternative design concepts consistent with schedule, cost, and material limitation.
  • Direct the design of apparatus, equipment, assemblies, facilities, utilities and systems by interpreting and translating design concepts and layouts.
  • Meet project/task schedules and budgets. Complete work assignments with accuracy and meet technical performance criteria with due consideration for cost/time constraints. Maintain appropriate level of documentation for activities.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • May lead the activities of nonexempt personnel.

What is Required:

  • Knowledge or experience equivalent to an BA level degree in a functional specialty closely aligned with a relevant program or equivalent computer aided drafting experience.
  • Experience with CREO Parametric (formerly Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire); Experience with CREO Parametric drawing package, including, but not limited to, GD&T, multiple sheet assembly drawings and detailed fabrication drawings.
  • Significant technical expertise and knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply mechanical engineering principles and practices to technical design and implementation of technical projects, or operational assignments.
  • Ability to interpret and translate objectives of job requirements into technical designs or functional concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with other scientists and engineers in defining goals and contributing to their realization.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex assemblies and understand parent-child relationships.
  • Experience estimating jobs and working with vendors to meet required schedules for construction.
  • Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 drafting standards.
  • Advanced modeling skills including proper use of patterns, sweeps and trajectories, simplified reps and top down design techniques.
  • Adaptability to learn and consistently apply new skills and technologies.
  • Proven track record of handling multiple projects from concept to reality, keeping pace with design needs.
  • Experience with vacuum system design, optics, structural supports, and precision engineering.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years related professional technical experience.
  • Working knowledge of CAD.

Salary:

If hired at level 1:

The full salary range of this position is between $6,561 to $11,076 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $7,385 to $9,025 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

If hired at level 2:

The full salary range of this position is between $7,853 to $13,254 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $8,835 to $10,799 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
