Who we are

Whāraurau works to improve the mental health and wellbeing of infants, children, adolescents and youth and those who care for them, by providing workforce development within the mental health and addiction sector in Aotearoa. Through UniServices, a wholly owned social impact company of Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland, we are contracted by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora and the Ministry of Education to grow the capacity and capability of the infant, child, adolescent, youth and whānau mental health and addictions workforces. We offer a range of e‑Learning courses, training, webinars and service supports that are government funded and free to access.

Job Description

  • Provide Māori cultural leadership advice to the Whāraurau workforce
  • National role based in either Auckland / Wellington / Christchurch
  • Infant, child, youth mental health + addictions sector

A great opportunity to step into this national Poutohu Māori | Māori Advisor in Māori Mental Health and AoD, in a permanent fulltime role in either of the above locations.  This role will provide cultural support and guidance to the Whāraurau team across all projects.  You will apply your Māori cultural expertise and lense to Whāraurau’s professional learning and development (PLD) activities. You will guide the integration of Māori models, practices, values and approaches into the design and development of PLD training resources and workshops for practitioners working with pēpi, tamariki, taiohi and whānau.  You will demonstrate an ability to weave and hold a Taha Māori world view in training programmes you design and deliver, that will grow our PLD under Te Tiriti and ultimately improve outcomes for our young people and whānau.

You will have experience in infant, child, and youth mental health and addictions working in partnership with their whānau.  You will demonstrate project management and delivery capability alongside your facilitation and delivery of training in mental health and wellbeing approaches.  This is a great opportunity to work for a positive and passionate purpose, whilst gaining exposure to national projects of significance that genuinely make a difference.

Key responsibilities:

  • Collaborate to ensure that current and ongoing work addresses the needs of Māori tangata whaiora, whānau and workers.
  • Support PLD initiatives that are developed to build capability and capacity of Māori mokopuna serving workforce.
  • Engage with key Māori stakeholders to ensure quality input to the work of Whāraurau and strengthen relationships.
  • Lead specific projects and provide cultural guidance across workforce projects.
  • Facilitate and support workshops and other presentations as required
  • Strengthen the cultural competence of the child and youth mental health workforce.

Qualifications

Your skills and experience:

It is essential for you to hold:

  • Relevant tertiary education qualifications in mental health and addictions, Māori studies, Health, Psychology or Graduation from Te Wharekura – full-immersion Māori secondary education
  • Intermediate level of Te Reo me ōnā tikanga.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Māori medium child pedagogy.
  • Confidence facilitating events and meetings and leading projects.
  • Experience and knowledge of child and youth mental health & AoD issues.
  • Knowledge of sector needs and issues in relationship to workforce development. Able to articulate the impact of mental, physical, emotional, social and spiritual issues for taiohi whaiora Māori.
  • The ability to travel nationally for weekly travel when required.
