Job Description

The perfusionist operates extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or temporarily replace the patient’s circulatory or respiratory function. The perfusionist is knowledgeable concerning the variety of equipment available to perform extracorporeal circulation and ancillary functions; and is responsible, in consultation with the physician, for selecting the appropriate techniques and equipment to be used.

Team/Schedule Information:   

  • 15 perfusionists.
  • Average call amount, for adult perfusionists, is 6 days/month. (includes 2call, 1call, etc.)
  • Rotating schedule including morning shifts, afternoon shifts, night shifts, call/weekends/holidays, etc.
  • Post call days are given after primary call shifts.
  • 24/7 in-house rotating perfusion Rounder coverage. 
    • Day rounder shifts are 7a-7p.  (about 2 weekday shifts/month)
    • Night rounder shifts are 7p-7a. (week off with each night rotation)
    • Night rotation schedule = ON Fri-Mon, OFF Tue-Mon, ON Tue-Thu, OFF Fri-Sun. (about 5 night rotations/year)
    • In-house rounder coverage reduces call in amounts for call team.
    • Ensures there is always another perfusionist in-house, for call person, if help/break needed.   
    • Rounder will do cannulations/changeouts, oversee and support the ECMO specialists, and facilitate ECMO needs. 
    • Rounder also provides backup to the OR, and helps coworkers, or performs other tasks, as needed.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

1. Bachelor’s Degree from an approved Perfusion Training program OR a Bachelor’s Degree with certification in perfusion technology (Required). 

2. Master’s Preferred.

CERTIFICATION/ LICENSURE/ REGISTRATION:

1. Eligible for Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (Required)

  • Current perfusion students who are anticipating graduation are also welcome to apply. 

2. Licensure with the State of Maryland, specific as a Perfusionist (Required)

  • Current perfusion students who are anticipating graduation/licensure are also welcome to apply. 

3. Current CPR Certification (Required)
