Under the leadership and direction of the Director of Black Student Initiatives, the Urban Scholar Coordinator will provide high touch, on-going wrap around student support and development and implement programing to address our urban scholar’s academic, personal, mental, financial, and spiritual needs. As a Catholic, Jesuit university located in an urban environment, Marquette University is committed to educating talented students from its surrounding community.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Facilitate and execute supplemental advising curriculum for an assigned case load of Scholars. This will be accomplished through fully engaging the scholars the entire time they are enrolled as a Marquette Student and providing guidance that centers on their academic success, social development, and future careers.
2. Establish relationships and work collaboratively with other units and offices that can provide support for Urban Scholars, including but not limited to the Center for Engagement and Inclusion, the Counseling Center, and Career Services, among others.
3. Provide individual and group academic coaching utilizing the Office of Student Educational Services’ coaching curriculum.
4. Become proficient in the application of all University academic, social, and financial policies.
5. Work with the Urban Scholar student governance structure to collaborate with internal and external partners to provide proactive and timely workshops for the Scholars.
6. Enforce, track, and follow-up on all university and Urban Scholar program requirements (academic supports, attendance, etc.).
7. Track Scholar academic performance throughout the entire academic year, paying close attention around midterms.
8. Implement research-proven student-success programming from Scholar entry to commencement.
9. Under the direction of the Office of Admissions, serve as a member of the Urban Scholar selection team.
10. Provide regular updates to the Director of Black Student Initiatives as to the academic performance of Urban Scholars.
11. Participate in recruitment and outreach efforts aimed at attracting new students to Urban Scholars.
12. Advise, train, execute leadership development opportunities for Scholars.
13. Oversee and execute daytime and nighttime programmatic events as necessary.
14. Co-coordinate leadership workshops and trainings as necessary.
15. May supervise graduate assistant(s) and/or student employees as necessary.
16. May be requested by the Director of Black Student Initiatives to serve on appropriate departmental or university committees

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs or similar degree (preferred) with up to three years of experience or a bachelor’s degree with at least 10 years of experience advising and creating and running programming for student’s success.

Knowledge of student success best practices and experience working with students from historically marginalized populations.
Skill at supporting student in a one-on-one setting.
Experience with advising and creating and running programming.
Strategic communication and ability to work collaboratively with campus partners.
Must be able to demonstrate empathy for others.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of student development theories and student success best practices.
