Veterinary Medicine & Surgery

The Veterinary Assistant will assist veterinary technicians and staff veterinarian in providing efficient high quality patient care. All tasks performed by the assistant will be in compliance with required levels of supervision as outlined by the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board (MVMB)
Provide all client services for the University of Missouri's Veterinary Health Center at Kansas City, a small animal emergency hospital. The hospital is open nights, weekends and holidays. Ability to work these hours is required.
Duties to include: answer phone concerning potential emergency cases and queries from referring DVMs and clients regarding cost estimates for services following consultation with staff veterinarians or veterinary technicians. Receive clients and patients presenting to the clinic, enter client/patient demographic data and service charges in hospital system (HIS), and check patients out, collect money for veterinary services. Utilize hospital information system and other software for data entry, requests, record maintenance and preparation and distribution of patient discharge instructions to clients and referring veterinarians. Assist with patient restraint/handling/transport. Monitor hospitalized patients, provide ward care. Collect samples (e.g., blood, urine and fecal), and administer medications as instructed, perform basic diagnostic procedures as requested within the skill set of the particular assistant consistent with MVMB guidelines. Assist with patient monitoring and preparation, operating room set-up/breakdown and cleaning instruments and surgical suite. Maintain and care for diagnostic and surgical equipment. Stock supplies and assist others to clean and maintain all service areas of the clinic.
Salary Range: $16.25/hour

The hospital is open nights, weekends and holidays. Ability to work these hours is required. Shifts will be discussed during interview process for further clarification.
High school diploma or equivalent experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Previous work in Veterinary Clinic or medical setting. Knowledge of veterinary vocabulary and medical terminology. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
