Position Summary Description:
Security Officer Sr / Training Coordinator: primarily responsible for training new hires during their initial two shifts and scheduling other training activities with senior officers, shift leads, and part-time officers. In addition to the regular officer responsibilities, the training coordinator will provide refresher training for all part-time staff, as well as administrative support for the team, including assistance with updating the team manual, scheduling, coverage, and communication issues; monitoring of First Aid and office supplies; and other administrative functions, as needed. The position will primarily work during the day, but will act as a floater to cover any shifts that have gaps in coverage. The officer is responsible for rounds, closing procedures, locking and unlocking doors, assisting patrons and staff, setting/disarming alarm systems, handling and/or reporting maintenance and custodial problems and, in general, dealing with any emergency or routine situations as needed.

Key Job Duties include: Train new officers; administer refresher Q&A training program; perform shift lead officer duties and 5pm closing round; deal with emergency and routine situations; and perform administrative duties as assigned.

Other Job Duties:

  • Perform the range of duties expected of all security officers, e.g., building patrols, open/close the building, security logs, police or medical reports.
  • Ensure the security the physical spaces of Ellis Library.
  • Assist patrons:
    • Answer general patron inquiries, connecting patron with other library staff as necessary.
    • In the event of a theft, work with patron and MUPD.
  • Prepare for and handle emergency situations.
  • Report maintenance problems through appropriate channels.
  • Investigate and report security incidents (e.g., policy violations, thefts, emergencies, etc.). Initiate communication with supervisor regarding security issues, project difficulties, etc.
  • Utilize various security systems and technology.

Nature of Work:

Ensures the security of a building or area of campus and the safety of occupants/patrons.

  • Understands how tasks/activities relate to others on the team and how the team integrates with other related, similar teams
  • Organizes and completes structured assignments (e.g., emergency and non-emergency complaints) according to priorities
  • Gathers and relays information according to standard processes and procedures
  • Maintains lists and logs, preparing records and reports as requested
  • Provides solutions to problems in situations that may be atypical or infrequently occurring
  • Evaluates and selects solutions from established options/procedures
  • Impacts own team through the quality of the services or information provided
  • Communicates through the regular exchange of information, ranging from routine to complex; ensures objectivity and sensitivity in communications are applied

Supervision Received
Works under general supervision, as needed, and manages own workload.

Salary

Salary Range: $16.00 – 17.50 per hour
GGS Grade: 006

Shift

There is some room for flexibility, but the primary work hours will either be Mon-Fri 11am-7pm -OR- Tue-Fri 10am-8pm. Late afternoon/evening hours are essential for this position, but some weekend and/or morning hours will be necessary for coverage and/or training purposes

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired is necessary


Preferred Qualifications

  • Must be able to pass standard First Aid and CPR courses.
  • Prior security experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Possession of a valid Missouri driver's license is required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with other staff.
  • Ability to follow established guidelines and appropriately respond to unique situations and meet project deadlines.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer/keyboarding skills preferred; basic knowledge required.
  • Ability to speak to groups & organize security seminars.
  • May require the ability to use step stools, ladders, or other devices.
  • Requires the ability to move and lift at least 25 lbs.
  • May expose you to mold and dust.
  • May require the ability to perform very detailed work.
  • Ability to complete scheduled walking rounds through the building.
