The Vice President (VP) - Government Affairs is responsible for managing government risks for the company. This includes monitoring and advocating on public policies and proposals, coordinating with internal business leaders on outlook and impact, planning and executing strategic campaigns, building and maintaining relationships with policymakers and influencers, managing consultants, directing organizations such as trade associations, aligning to an operations budget, recommending political and related contributions, and collaborate internally and externally to protect reputational brand risks of the company and the single-family rental home industry to key stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitors and lobbies state and local policies and proposals affecting AMH’s company interests for current and future issues to ensure policies are consistent with the company’s mission and goals.
  • Partner and coordinate with internal business leaders on communication efforts to ensure that all stakeholders are aware of relevant issues (i.e., media releases, speeches, newsletters, social media communication, etc.).
  • Manage consultants and associations to develop and implement strategies and initiatives for helping state and local leaders with the implementation of policies and initiatives that align with organization priorities. Develop and help oversee state- and local-focused events that uplift and amplify initiatives of elected officials and advocates along with external partners.
  • Manage and oversee strategic planning for upcoming risks, budgets, contributions, and organizations to support and promote the strategic objectives.
  • Oversee policy analysis to assess probability and impact of policies and proposals to ensure strategies for helping state and local leaders with the implementation of policies and initiatives that align with organization priorities.
  • Manage/oversee activities to support the broader company and our company colleagues in a dynamic environment with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Build and maintain relationships with policymakers, influencers, and industry to build support impacting the company’s interests.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Communications, and/or related preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in a related field holding progressively responsible roles in a related background including proven experience in comparable senior leadership roles.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ leadership experience with direct reports preferred.
  • Experience working in an elected office, advocacy, or within public policy, strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of, and experience working with federal, state, local, and real estate issues preferred.
