Principal, Software Engineer - Health and Wellness - Optical

Position Summary...What you'll do...As a Principal Software Engineer for our Vision Center business, you will be responsible for developing robust and scalable solutions within our Optics back-end platform in support of various consumer experiences - both in-store and online. Technology stack includes (but not limited to) using Java and Spring boot frameworks, Kafka, and CosmosDB. You will provide oversight and guidance in designing and implementing high performance APIs and integrate with 3rd party services that are both internal and external to Walmart.This role will be cross-functional in nature across multiple engineering teams based on priority deliverables for each quarter, along with periods of low-level engagement and development as necessary to deliver certain features in a timely and accurate manner. Your role will be pivotal in shaping the future of our Vision Center business.About Team:Our team works closely with our US stores and eCommerce business to better serve customers by empowering team members, stores, and merchants with technological innovation. From groceries and entertainment to sporting goods and crafts, Walmart U.S. offers an extensive selection that our customers value, whether they shop online at Walmart.com, through one of our mobile apps, or in-store. Focus areas include customers, stores and employees, in-store service, merchant tools, merchant data science, and search and personalization.What you'll do:• Architecture and Design: Lead the design and architecture of complex enterprise backend systems, making high to low level design decisions and ensuring alignment with overall business and technical strategies.• Leadership Support: Work closely with the Director of engineering to prepare and document presentation materials for Technology, Product, and Business leadership when necessary.• Conduct Code Reviews and Testing: Perform code reviews to ensure best practices and maintain high code quality. Review and monitor the testing cycle to ensure the reliability and robustness of the services being built.• Technical Leadership and Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other developers, ensuring best practices are followed and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.• Project Management: Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of the projects. Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure timely completion of deliverables and adherence to quality standards.• Stakeholder Communication: Act as a liaison between technical teams and business stakeholders, translating technical concepts into clear, understandable terms and ensuring alignment with business objectives.• Develop and Maintain Backend Services: You will design, build, enhance, and optimize backend services using Java and frameworks like Spring boot. Your work will ensure high performance, scalability, and reliability of our server-side applications.• Data Management: Implement and manage real-time data streaming using technologies like Kafka, Google Pub-Sub. Utilize databases such as Azure CosmosDB, Azure SQL, and Azure Storage to store and retrieve data efficiently. You will design and maintain database schemas, ensure data integrity, and optimize queries for performance.• Implement Security and Authentication: Develop and maintain secure authentication and authorization mechanisms to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with industry standards.• Optimize Application Performance: Identify and address performance bottlenecks in the application. Use profiling tools and techniques to ensure the backend services are running efficiently.• Monitor and Troubleshoot Issues: Setup monitoring and alerting mechanisms to track the health and performance of backend services. Diagnose and resolve production issues to ensure high availability and reliability of the system.• Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with team leads and other developers to understand the requirements, provide technical insights and deliver end-to-end solutions.• Maintain Cost Efficiency: Routinely identify and document measures that can be taken in order to achieve cloud cost savings goals, along with achieving optimal levels of overall platform/system health.What you'll bring:• Excellent oral and written communications skills• Solid understanding of microservice-based architecture and development of RESTful services• Experience working with Eclipse and/or IntelliJ for Java application development• Experience developing applications using Java version 11, 17, or later• Can independently develop solutions using Spring Boot and Spring Batch frameworks• Experience implementing TDD practices using JUnit/Mock frameworks• Experience with products utilized within the Microsoft Azure cloud platform• CosmosDB• Azure Blob Storage• Azure SQL• Experience working with applications that integrate with Apache Kafka for data streaming• Knowledge of docker and containerized deployments within Kubernetes• Experience working on systems/applications supporting the healthcare industry or any other where encryption of data is required using AES, RSA etc.,• Understands how to manage source code using standard Github practices• Knowledge of how to navigate in Linux operating system environments• Knowledge of creating CI jobs using Jenkins or similar tools• Familiarity with Ansible deployment tools• Comfortable managing day-to-day work using Jira• Previous experience creating documentation in Confluence• Ability to create both high-level and low-level system and architecture diagrams within Confluence using Draw.io and/or similar tools• Familiar with navigating and working in Figma as it relates to UX designs and workflows• 2 - 4 years' experience with design/architecture of complex systems supporting enterprise systems and/or healthcare applications• Ability to mentor and guide junior developers on the team• Ability to interview and evaluate potential candidates for recruitment purposes• Ability to provide technology and program leadership with project status updatesAbout Walmart Global TechImagine working in an environment where one line of code can make life easier for hundreds of millions of people.
