Staff Software Engineer, ML Modeling Infrastructure

The Perception team at Waymo is at the heart of our Autonomous Vehicles with a mission to perceive and represent everything from pedestrians to vehicles to tail phenomena. Perception Scalability is the System’s arm of the Perception team, which builds and maintains a collection of Perception’s onboard and offboard systems. This spans areas from a high functioning and performant onboard real-time system to offboard systems that support our Machine Learning development including data extraction, model development, evaluation, debugging, and data mining.

As Perception builds on advancements in Foundation Models and new technologies, you will focus on building systems and leading cross organizationally to enable a transition to foundation models.

In this role, you'll:

• Report to the leader of the Perception Scalability team, design and implement shared data and modeling infrastructure
• Lead cross organizationally and communicate both up and downstream.
• Build systems to land an on the team's ML roadmap.
• Collaborate with Product, Data Science, Design and other teams across Waymo

At a minimum we'd like you to have:

• 5+ years of industry experience
• Demonstrated expertise in C++ or Python
• Understanding of large-scale distributed systems, from design to implementation
• Hands-on experience in model development.
• Experience leading in a complex product.
• Experience in Robotics or Machine Learning

It's preferred if you have:

• Familiarity with Google Infrastructure: Flume, Spanner, Borg, Tensorflow, JAX, or Guitar
• Experience deploying large-scale production systems with many ML models
• Experience optimizing High-Performance systems
• Experience with HLO, Triton, GPU, or TPU optimization
• Experience with PyTorch

The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level.
