This is an exciting opportunity to join the WJ Group, The UK’s leading road marking and highway safety business. We deliver high-performance, award-winning solutions to the strategic road network, local authority and private markets.

Reporting to the Group Commercial Manager, the successful candidate will be managing the ‘front-end’ commercial aspects of our strategic bidding function across a variety of Clients and contract types, and ideally will have a background in highways contracting such as civils or surfacing. Knowledge of the different options of NEC4 contracts would also be an advantage.

    Job Description

    This new role will see the successful applicant joining our central commercial business function. This is a hybrid role, but will regularly require time to be spent at our head office in Stoke. The role will also require travelling to our other offices and Clients around the UK, so a full driving licence will be required.

    The role will involve being part of a team, working closely with commercial and operational colleagues- to ensure schemes are tendered in accordance with the contract conditions, mitigating commercial risk and ensuring thorough handover once secured.    

    The position incorporates the following positions of responsibility:

    • Working closely with the Group Commercial Manager to manage and coordinate strategic bidding activity, leading and delivering successful bids, on time at to the highest possible standards.
    • Writing quality submissions, completing PQQ’s and pricing models.
    • Lead on commercial aspects of major projects, both pre contract and post award, ensuring alignment with company objectives and client expectations.
    • Review, negotiate, and manage complex contract terms and conditions, ensuring compliance and mitigation of risks.
    • Ensure accurate handovers of secured contracts to regional operations teams so there is a thorough understanding of pricing/assumptions/contract T’s & C’s.
    • Act as the primary commercial point of contact for strategic clients, maintaining strong, collaborative relationships.
    • Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction and work in a collaborative manner to engage regularly with the clients and ensure they receive timely updates on the progress of the tenders.
    • Represent the company in client meetings, presentations, and key decision-making forums.
    • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless project commercial delivery.
    • Identify and manage commercial risks, implementing mitigation strategies to minimize exposure.
    • Ensure compliance with legal, contractual, and regulatory requirements.
    • Stay informed about industry trends, market conditions, and competitive pressures.
    • Provide strategic input to enhance WJ’s competitive position in the market.

    Qualifications

    • Experience in commercial management within the construction industry, including major project delivery.

    • Strong negotiation skills in order to drive best value from your projects.
    • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.

    • Strategic mindset with a focus on results and continuous improvement.
    • Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field. (preferable)
    • Membership of a relevant professional body (preferable)
