About the Role

Reporting to the Director of Data & Analytics, the Data Engineering Manager will be responsible for advancing the maturity of data engineering and self-service BI for data driven decision making at ZayZoon.

We are looking for a talented and empathetic leader who is driven to solve complex problems and able to support the development of team members and collaborate with multiple stakeholders. The candidate will be responsible for the operational management of the Data Engineering function and champion the design and development of the Data Platform - from infrastructure design to the creation and management of data pipelines.

The role is for someone who can combine their engineering acumen with analytical expertise and a desire to learn. Strong communication skills are a must to bridge the gap between different perspectives on the spectrum of data literacy, as well as the gap between technical and non-technical audiences.

  • You'll create and manage data pipelines. If data is moving from one system to another or is required for better Analytics or systems enablement, you'll be the point person to make that happen.
  • We build for stability. With pipelines and ETL processes, the orchestration and monitoring of these processes for accuracy, reliability and timeliness is critical for us.
  • Make things better. You'll maintain, improve, and optimize ZayZoon’s data platform and our data integration pipeline, helping wherever possible to automate tasks and work more efficiently.
  • You’ll manage team operations. Manage, mentor and grow a team of data engineers, fostering a high performance team culture of collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.
  • You’ll manage projects. Lead and manage data engineering projects and roadmaps from conception to execution, including timelines, resources and deliverables.
  • Build relationships. As an SME in Data, you’ll have people coming to you for help. You will be helping them succeed, and your outstanding ability to communicate with people will help them do that.

  • Experience: 8+ years of experience in data engineering, with at least 1 years of experience in a management or leadership role.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong proficiency in modern data engineering technologies such as AWS, GCP, Azure, Spark, Kafka and relational databases (e.g. SQL, noSQL)
  • Data Pipeline Expertise:  Proven experience in designing and maintaining large-scale data pipelines and ETL processes in cloud-based environments.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to manage and lead a high-performance engineering team, including hiring, coaching and performance management.
  • Programming: Highly proficient in Python and SQL, experience in other programming languages such as Java and Scala for data engineering.
  • Communication: Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Has the ability to work autonomously. We count on you to get your work done, in ambiguous conditions, with tight deadlines, while still producing high-quality work.
  • Is all about collaboration. You’ll be working with Product Managers, Engineers and business folks as their go-to data person. It’s not going to work if you don’t see the value of different perspectives.
  • Is a stellar communicator. This means you know how to translate technical terms into non-technical language that folks outside your domain can understand.
  • Is good with other tech. ZayZoon is a diverse place with lots of different tools, languages, frameworks, structures and types of analysis

Candidates must be located in Canada to be considered.

We are organized as a remote team, as such we are looking for candidates who can work effectively remotely. You must have access to a secure high speed internet connection and a secure workspace to ensure security of private information. This role is available on a permanently remote basis.

Please be aware that as part of our final hiring process, we will conduct reference calls with previous managers and possibly other individuals. Additionally, due to the nature of our business, a criminal record check and a basic security clearance will also be required.

We wish to thank all qualified applicants for their interest in joining our team!
