About the Position: This position is located at Naval Health Clinic Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina.

 

NHS Charleston is located in Goose Creek, SC just outside of historic Charleston.  Charleston, the South Carolina port city founded in 1670, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pastel antebellum houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts. This position is located at Naval Health Clinic, Cherry Point , NC.

Responsibilities

MAJOR DUTIES

1. Serves as a recognized technical authority in the delivery of Psychiatric medical care to a wide demographic and large variety of psychiatric patient presentations, symptoms, conditions, and complexities. Provides treatment services in any capacity including, but not limited to, inpatient services, consultation liaison services, day programs, emergency psychiatric services, tele-psychiatric services, and routine and intensive outpatient services. Makes recommendations on major diagnostics and treatment plans. Develops treatment and rehabilitation plans and provides appropriate therapeutic treatment services that may include medication management, various individual therapy modalities, group therapy, and new treatments as they arise. Monitors treatment effectiveness through evidence-based medicine and alters course of treatment as needed through individualized treatment plans, provides continuing follow-up care for inpatients and outpatients with mental health disorders such as psychosis, organic brain syndrome, substance abuse/addictions, etc. and for complications related to these disorders and provides psychiatric care for walk-in patients presenting with acute illness. Conducts thorough biopsychosocial evaluations of presenting patients, including but not limited to integration of laboratory, radiological, EKG, psychological testing, and clinical findings. Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment.

Provides appropriate referrals to other medical and mental health care providers in and outside of MTF, including network providers, network and hospital contractors, and patient assistance groups outside the agency (Unit and Family Services, Military One Source, service component community Services). Identifies patient treatment needs and arranges for a safe therapeutic outcome. Collaborates with physicians in other medical specialties on cases involving rare, complicated, and multifaceted cases that require advanced treatments. Provides professional consultation, supervision, and collaborative medical support to other professional staff such as psychologists, advanced practice nurses, social workers, and other healthcare providers within the MTF and across other mental health clinics. Serves as member of local Medical Evaluation Boards for assessment and determination of duty. Determines and provides mental health assessments of fitness and suitability for duty, weapon handling, and deployments of service members based on psychiatric clinical assessment and interpretation and application of various relevant policies and instructions from the Department of Defense, Defense Health Agency, DoD Service component regulations, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, and local MTF. Provides timely communication to patient’s Command on mental health issues where disclosure is required per Department of Defense Instructions (DODI).

 

2. Performs administrative and educational work. Engages in highly specialized scholarly activities which encompass diverse research methods and types. Research activities may involve the development, testing or evaluation of innovative therapies.

Participates in committees and meetings responsible for the evaluation of care provided to patients at the MTF. Identifies opportunities to change the care delivered, advises on difficult or complex cases, and recommends corrective action when problems exist. Participates in Quality Assurance (QA) functions, performance improvement programs, risk management programs, and peer review programs.

Makes recommendations on improvement of work methods and organizational features while serving on committees or working groups that review and establish new treatment guidelines or updates policy for mental health across the service component and DHA. As a professional staff member and technical authority of the MTF, regularly presents research and recommendations at national academic and professional organization conferences, in order to advance the field of psychiatry. Serves as member of the professional medical staff and provides advisory and consultative services on various local and national meetings, committees, conferences, and/or boards. Reviews clinical work including individual cases and trends as well as research and higher committee work for potential impact (positive or negative) on objectives and goals of the MTF, DHA, BUMED, DoD Service components, and DOD, including potential international impact. Makes recommendations on improvement of work methods and organizational features and assists in establishing policies and guidelines related to mental health care.

Board Certified/Eligible

 

Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicants graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).

 

Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
