Providence recognizes the need for systemic radical change

Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is central to Our Promise of "Know me, care for me, ease my way." Our DEI work is underway, and we are committed to doing the challenging work that is needed Together, Providence caregivers and leaders will do our part to rectify centuries of health care injustices to fulfill our vision of health for a better world.

Diversity is central to hiring and promotions

We know diversity is central to building an equitable and inclusive workplace—and that our caregivers and teams should reflect the diverse communities they serve. We strive to build a workplace where all caregivers feel heard, respected and valued.

Inclusive and varied perspectives help us deliver the highest quality care. Our goal is to recruit, develop and promote diverse talent across all levels and departments. We bring the brightest minds and biggest hearts to Providence, prioritizing diversity in race, culture, gender identity or expression and sexual orientation, background, experience, talent and thought.

Providence fosters an inclusive workplace

We don’t tolerate behavior that perpetuates bias or stereotypes. We foster an inclusive workplace where caregivers of differing backgrounds and perspectives can experience a community of mutual respect and collegiality, knowing that diversity is valued.

Caregiver Resource Groups

Providence and our family of organizations are proud to have numerous Caregiver (Employee) Resource Groups at the local and/or regional level, which are voluntary, employee-led groups designed to create a more inclusive workplace focused on business networking and enhancing career and development. These groups of caregivers come together based on shared characteristics or life experiences.

Learning & Development

Through RISE, our system's online learning platform, our caregivers and leaders are expanding their knowledge and evolving behavior through Diversity, Equity and Inclusion learning pathways including "Foundations of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion" and "Cultural Responsiveness and Inclusion" that focus on identifying and overcoming implicit bias, recognizing systemic injustice and eliminating microaggressions.

Community Partnerships

Each year, we serve more than 6 million people of every walk of life. We value each member of our diverse communities for their identities, journeys and experiences. And we commit to doing the personal and institutional work needed to live the values of Providence, which call us to welcome all and serve one another with respect and dignity. Our investment of $50 million to reduce health disparities and achieve health equity is just the beginning.

We pledge to:

  1. Build, strengthen and maintain relationships with our diverse communities, including people of color, indigenous people, those who identify as LGBTQIA+ and others experiencing inequities, oppression and discrimination
  2. Listen to and partner with our patients, communities and health plan members to understand and actively reduce structural, racial and cultural barriers to health for all
  3. Partner with community organizations to develop data-informed health equity strategies and implement proven practices to resolve the root causes of health disparities
  4. Amplify the voices of all identities impacted by oppression. Advocate to reform the drivers of health, social and economic disparities. And in keeping with our faith tradition, use our voice to speak out against the structural racism and injustice that has led to a public health crisis
  5. Prevent further harm, humbly welcome discussion and feedback, and foster a culture of continuous learning and transparency

As part of our commitment to collaborating with those who best understand the opportunities and challenges in the areas where they live and work, we developed the Action Hub, a digital platform designed for the Providence family of organizations that connects our caregivers to a wide variety of volunteer opportunities across many communities. Learn more and read stories about how we’re working toward our vision of “health for a better world” through solidarity with our community partners.

Last year, the Providence family of organizations invested $1.9 billion in the health and well-being of our communities. None of this progress would be possible without the dedication, professionalism and compassion of our caregivers. Throughout a difficult year, they cared for our patients, our communities and each other. For detailed information about our focus areas and regional investments, read Our Annual Report.

Beyond our local communities, and thanks to longstanding relationships with trusted partners, we respond to domestic and international emergencies and have helped reduce disparities and improve health outcomes at home and in some of the world’s most impoverished countries.
