What You Will Do

Do something that matters and make a real difference at one of the World's most prestigious and innovative multidisciplinary research institutions.

The Associate Laboratory Director for Defense Protection Program (ALDDPP) Undergraduate Student (UGS) Program offers paid internships in a variety of Safeguards, Security, and Emergency Management disciplines. The program provides mentoring, hands-on experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's chosen area of study.

Examples of ALDDPP organizations, teams, and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • EM-RESP (Emergency Response), EM-OPS (Emergency Operations), and EM-PREP (Emergency Preparedness) responsible for establishing and sustaining "world class" emergency management and continuity programs by applying science and technology. These organizations' primary mission is to protect the workforce, public, property and critical infrastructure, and environment through integration of preparedness, response, recovery, mitigation, and readiness assurance.
  • SEC-PS (Personnel Security) responsible for Badge and HSPD-12 Support, Security Awareness, Clearance Processing, Human Reliability Program, and Substance Abuse.
  • SEC-PSS (Physical Security Systems) responsible for Administrative Access Control System, Argus, Design, Installation and Warehouse Operations, and Operations Control.
  • SEC-SI (Security Investigations) responsible for conducting inquiries into allegations of misuse of government resources, fraud, waste, abuse, and theft of government property.
  • SEC-CUAS (Counter Unmanned Aircraft System) responsible for NA-70 support implementing CUAS at other DOE sites.
  • SEC-PPO (Protection Program Operations) responsible for Export Control, Classified Matter Protection and Control, Lock and Key, and Physical Protection Team.
  • SAFE-DS (Deployed Security) responsible for assisting line managers integrate security policies and procedures into daily line functions.
  • SAFE-NMCA (Nuclear Material Control and Accountability) responsible for providing graded levels of control for accountable nuclear material (NM) and special nuclear material (SNM) to deter and detect theft or diversion of accountable material.
  • SAFE-PA (Planning and Analysis) responsible for providing state-of-the-art planning and preparedness services to protect national security assets and the health and safety of workers, the public, and the environment.
  • SAFE-OA (Operational Assurance) responsible for validating the operational readiness of ALDDPP and ensuring that all ALDDPP components fully meet the requirements for readiness and performance as set by the Department of Energy (DOE).
  • ALDDPP-CL (Office of Classification) responsible for the maintenance of the Laboratory's institutional capabilities and resources for identifying classified and controlled unclassified information.
  • ALDDPP-PO (Program Office) responsible for ensuing safeguards and security requirements are incorporated into all LANL projects including financial oversight.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's degree program in any Safeguards, Security, Emergency Management, Business Administration, or similar discipline.
  • Must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent). Entering college freshmen must provide documentation indicating matriculation into an undergraduate degree program.
  • Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Desired Qualifications:

Student selected for UGS internships in ALDDPP are most competitive when they possess the following knowledge and skills:
  • High level of customer service and attention to detail;
  • Commitment to security and safety;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional context; and
  • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
