Global Banking and Markets


Global Banking & Markets provides a full range of investment banking, credit and risk management products and services relevant to the financing and strategic development needs of our clients. Our products include debt and equity financing, mergers & acquisitions, corporate banking, institutional equity sales, trading and research, fixed income products, derivatives, energy, foreign exchange and precious & metals. We also cross-sell the full range of wholesale products and services offered by the Scotiabank Group.


Position Highlights


Associates in Investment Banking enjoy a stimulating and challenging work environment in which they execute a broad range of transactions. A significant amount of effort, diligence and initiative is required to properly execute assignments.


At the early stages of their career, Associates focus on client presentations, financial modeling, research and mentoring/supervising Analysts. As the career progresses, Associates take on increased responsibilities on live transactions and participating in business development under the guidance of senior group members. Scotiabank brings new Associates in contact with senior team members and clients at the earliest possible stage, allowing them to gain experience in managing and cultivating relationships.


A significant amount of effort, diligence and initiative is required to properly execute assignments. The complexity of clients’ financial requirements coupled with the intense competitiveness of the investment banking industry necessitates a full commitment to the role. Standards are very high as most work is presented to senior executives at client firms.


Associates will contribute to the overall success of the team ensuring specific individual goals, plans, and initiatives are executed /delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Above all, they ensure all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.


With a limited hierarchy of professionals and a small project team approach, Associates have ample opportunity for career growth and development. On any given project, Associates will interact with other departments of the firm such as Corporate Banking, Equity Capital Markets, Global Fixed Income and Global Equity Derivatives gaining knowledge and understanding of both investment banking and the capital markets.


New Associates may participate in the Capital Ideas Program, an intensive training program developed by Scotiabank. The program is designed to orient participants to our culture, people, products and services and to provide the soft and technical skills, and contacts critical for success. Team projects, individual study and social activities supplement classroom discussions.


Overview of the Power & Utilities Group

Scotiabank’s Power & Utilities Investment Banking team is a leading U.S. financial advisor to utility corporates, renewable energy companies, and financial investors. The team is actively involved with a wide array of industry participants and has a successful track record, with 20+ M&A transactions executed over the last 12 months. Associates have the opportunity to immediately and meaningfully contribute to live transactions including sell-side renewable asset/portfolio sales and capital raises for leading renewable platforms.


Key Responsibilities

  • Champion a client centric culture focused on deepening client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge to deliver solutions that Scotiabank can provide across its footprint and generate revenue. Relationship management and cross collaboration includes:
    • Coordinating with the various product groups and industry team within GBM
    • Developing and maintaining effective industry relationships with legal counsel, external parties, clients
  • The day-to-day responsibilities include the following:
    • Evaluating and analyzing the financial needs of corporate clients, including the development of financial models, supporting the team in determining advisory and financing solutions for our clients
    • Collecting, consolidating, and interpreting company and industry data
    • Performing comprehensive financial statement analysis and create and maintain models
    • Financial and written analysis of companies and industries
    • Identifying and developing business opportunities with clients
    • Preparing client presentations, including compiling data and assembling presentation materials
    • Supporting transaction structuring and execution efforts, with increasing levels of responsibility and accountability over time
    • Applying product and capital markets knowledge to help clients achieve their financial objectives
  • Develop more junior bankers on their team and across CIB and GBM through active engagement on developing their skills (technical, coverage, and other leadership skills) providing real-time positive and constructive feedback to support their development
  • Actively partner with group leaders and broader team to build team dynamics and engagement across teams
  • Actively contribute to a high performance and inclusive work environment


Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if have:


  • 3-6 years’ work experience in Investment Banking; Equity Research or corporate finance in an accounting firm
  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in Business, Finance, Math, Engineering, Economics, Science or Technology
  • Strong quantitative skills focused on financial analysis, accounting and financial theory
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent command of Microsoft Suite, with an emphasis on Excel
  • A high level of attention to detail
  • A high level of energy and a keen desire to learn new concepts
  • The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with competing deadlines while maintaining a high standard of work
  • The ability to perform effectively in a team environment
  • High professional standards including a strong sense of personal integrity and teamwork
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly adapt to new situations
  • Independent thinker and proven ability to make decisions
  • Flexible to demands of work and viewed as a valuable team resource
  • Obtain and maintain required FINRA registration and licensing appropriate to your functions and responsibilities
