Associate Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Learning

The Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost for Clemson University invites applications for the role of Associate Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Learning (AP & Dean for UL). A member of the provost’s leadership team and leader of the Division of Undergraduate Studies, the AP & Dean for UL serves as the lead advocate for undergraduate education by promoting and implementing engaged learning opportunities and other student success initiatives as well as ensuring access to high quality teaching and learning across the institution. Through leadership, vision, and collaboration, the AP & Dean for UL directly impacts and supports the University’s strategic plan and vision to be nationally preeminent in undergraduate and graduate education. Other expected contributions include the leadership and support of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives, enhancing curriculum through clear academic policies and procedures.

The University’s Division of Undergraduate Learning sponsors many innovative programs and services focused on enhancing the academic experience from enrollment through graduation. These include

  • Transfer Student Academic program
  • FIRST program
  • Summer Start program
  • Academic Integrity and Eligibility
  • University Testing Center

Additionally, the following departments and programs are also housed in the Division of Undergraduate Learning and report to the Associate Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Learning:

  • Academic Success Center
  • Student Accessibility Services
  • Center for Career and Professional Development (University Professional Internship and Co-Op programs)
  • Rutland Institute for Ethics

Responsibilities of the position

  • Serve as the lead advocate for undergraduate education at the university and nationally
  • Supervise associate deans, directors, and administrative support staff
  • Engage in strategic planning and implementation of university policies related to undergraduate education
  • Provide leadership for the undergraduate curriculum committee and Council on Undergraduate Studies
  • Collaborate with Student Affairs and other campus and community partners to provide holistic care and resources for students
  • Promote and support academic integrity; providing leadership and resources for students
  • Collaborate the coordination of undergraduate student marketing and recruitment activities;
  • Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within undergraduate education in collaboration with internal and external partners
  • Support students and instructors in civil dialogue about complex and contentious local, state, regional, national, and global issues
  • Contribute to University representation and engagement with the State Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education


Minimum qualifications for this position are a terminal degree, a distinguished record of achievements that would merit an appointment as professor with tenure in an academic department in a college at Clemson University, and a strong record of academic leadership, administrative experience, and responsibilities.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate learning, outstanding capacity to communicate with multiple constituencies, and ability to provide leadership for a broad spectrum of academic programs and initiatives.
