The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is a department of the City and County of San Francisco responsible for the management of all ground transportation in the city. The SFMTA has oversight over the Municipal Railway (Muni) public transit, as well as bicycling, paratransit, parking, traffic, walking, and taxis.

The Livable Streets mission is to create safe and inviting streets and sidewalks for all who walk and use a bicycle, focusing on projects that advance San Francisco’s Vision Zero commitment to eliminate traffic deaths in San Francisco. This work unit is responsible for delivering bicycle, pedestrian, and traffic calming projects in conjunction with other departments, including San Francisco Public Works, Planning Department, and Recreation and Park Department on time and within budget. These projects require a heavy emphasis on teamwork and consensus-building within the Agency, with stakeholders, and with elected officials, as well as a thorough understanding of how bicycle and pedestrian projects affect transit, accessibility, and traffic operations. Under general supervision and as part of a team of transportation engineers and planners, the Junior Engineer applies engineering principles and practices to transportation engineering problems to design and deliver high-priority bicycle and pedestrian safety projects that support San Francisco’s Transit First and Vision Zero goals, including performing engineering work in the field and office following established engineering methods and procedures.
This position completes tasks in support of various projects in the SFMTA’s Livable Streets Subdivision, including quick build projects and more traditional capital construction projects. These projects will design and implement pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements along corridors, including protected bike lanes, new and modified traffic control signals, pedestrian bulb-outs and islands, and other traffic engineering measures to improve safety for all roadway users.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT DUTIES:
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Possession of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree from an engineering program with a major in the Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Structural Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or Engineering Management. AND
B. Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate issued by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). AND
C. One (1) year of verifiable professional Civil engineering experience performing at least three of the following tasks:
a. Preparing or assisting in preparing studies, designs, drawings, sketches, and plans using AutoCAD and other software tools
b. Collecting data to assess project needs and define project scope through site visits, surveying, review of existing documents, reports, drawing and manuals, performing measurements, collecting samples, or/and interviews with the stakeholders.
c. Preparing or assisting in the preparation of contract specifications, lists of materials, cost estimates, schedules, and progress payments.
d. Preparing or assisting in the preparation of engineering reports and reports concerning field conditions, the progress of projects, the results of studies, and other matters.
e. Conducting data analyses and mathematical calculations, in order to determine type or size of material or equipment.
f. Conducting routine field inspections of construction and repair projects in progress to ensure conformance with plans, specifications and codes; checks and records work progress at various construction sites.
Note: Internships, drafting experience and student design work do not qualify as professional engineering experience.

2. Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Civil Engineering from the California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
