Content Director

City Cast is seeking a creative, strategic, and experienced Content Director to oversee 4-6 of its daily local podcast and newsletter teams. This key content leader will be responsible for ensuring that City Cast podcasts and newsletters are highly engaging, habit-forming, and essential daily listening and reading for locals in their cities. Our ideal candidate is a creative and dynamic leader with exceptional editorial instincts and the ability to bring out the best in people and products through coaching, feedback, and collaboration. The Content Director will be a thoughtful and diplomatic manager-of-managers who models effective conflict resolution and team building. Experience successfully collaborating with marketing and revenue teams is a plus. The Content Director will report to the Chief Creative Officer and will oversee 4-6 local City Cast teams, each composed of 4-6 staff.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Help the city teams make their podcasts and newsletters continually better and more successful
  • Ensure each City Cast podcast and newsletter meets our editorial, quality, and style standards 
  • Develop and disseminate key content insights and best practices across the network, helping drive the ambition, creativity, and audience appeal of our content 
  • Provide thoughtful, constructive, regular feedback to the city teams on a regular basis
  • Work closely with Executive Producers and their teams to develop ambitious creative story and booking ideas, and to hone their visions for their local brands 
  • Ensure daily newsletters and web articles are consistent, accurate and formatted correctly 
  • Serve as a key interpreter of show and newsletter data; help identify meaningful trends and takeaways 
  • Work across the local editorial teams and membership team to develop and execute successful membership campaigns that utilize best practices while harnessing the authentic local sensibility
  • Work across the local editorial teams and the revenue team to develop creative, distinctive sponsorship packages that meet our editorial standards while delighting advertisers
  • Serve as an essential mentor and sounding board to Executive Producers as they navigate management challenges and staffing changes
  • Lead key hiring processes during new show launches and staff turnover
  • Help teams effectively “market” their daily episodes and newsletters via effective episode titles, subject lines, and article headlines 
  • Act as an essential liaison and connector across city teams and HQ 
  • Work with the CCO and your fellow Content Directors to innovate and shape the future of local journalism!

  • An understanding of what makes for compelling conversational podcast content
  • An understanding of what makes for a great daily newsletter and short-form web articles
  • A thoughtful and inclusive approach to leadership and mentorship
  • Boundless creativity, a positive attitude, resourcefulness, and a passion for local media 
  • Experience producing podcasts
  • Experience working on a daily turnaround 
  • Experience working at a remote-first organization

Required:

  • At-least 2 years managing a creative or editorial team, ideally in audio 
  • Journalism degree or equivalent editorial experience

This position is full-time and remote, with competitive benefits. Our salary range is $120K - $135K, depending on experience.
