Cloud Systems Engineer

About the Team & Role

As Cloud Systems Engineer, you are responsible for supporting, developing, configuring, implementing, optimizing, and working with SecOps to secure and resolve issues with AWS and Azure IaaS, which powers our platforms. We have a mix of PaaS natively built on top of AWS IaaS, Snowflake, Databricks, and DE-ID engines. You will help establish and execute cloud operations per our platform needs around scale, cost optimization, and security. You will interface with Engineering, DevOps, DataOps, and SecOps towards defining and establishing those technical requirements for our cloud operations.

You will

• Contribute to and demonstrate ownership over major components of our infrastructure, taking responsibility for their maintenance and improvement over time
• Work on system initiatives and new projects
• Work with external vendors/consultants to diagnose complex problems and drive resolution
• Build, manage, monitor, and maintain our AWS and Azure IaaS (GCP on the horizon)
• Help with improvements to operational practices and procedures
• Develop and enhance the automation and deployment of all aspects of our IaaS environment – both AWS and Azure (GCP on the horizon) using Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
• Maintain documents and standards and help remediate any security or technical issues as they arise
• Support the IaaS powering some of our PaaS, like our DE-ID engine (which leveraged EKS and EMR), Abacus stack powered by AWS IaaS and Serverless components, Databricks and Snowflake
• Work collaboratively with various teams, including engineering, DevOps, DataOps, and SecOps
• Mentor platform team members to ensure adherence to cloud architecture strategy, IAM Policy, IaC coding standards, and established organizational policies and procedures
• Participate in software/cloud architectural discussions, influencing decisions, and collaborating with peers to maintain consistency across the organization
• Communicate organizational updates to ensure teams adhere to the established policies and procedures
• Ensure projects are completed on time and according to our quality standards
• Facilitate communication around architecture, design, and implementation objectives
• Be responsible for protecting, securing, and properly handling all confidential data held by Abacus to ensure against unauthorized access, improper transmission, and unapproved disclosure of information that could harm Abacus or our clients.
• Assist with other tasks and projects as assigned

What we're looking for

• Excellent knowledge of cloud system administration and security
• Experience with IAM on AWS and Azure
• Must be able to work independently to troubleshoot, perform root cause analysis, identify and isolate technical issues
• Minimum of 3+ years experience building and supporting IaaS in AWS and Azure. GCP is a bonus
• Minimum of 3+ years experience in network and network security setup and diagnosing/troubleshooting issues with VPC, VNet, Availability Zone/Regions, private link, and IaaS that run on a network backplane like Kubernetes
• Minimum of 3+ years experience with security authentication and IAM policy setup. Experience with IDP is also desired (AWS Cognito, Azure B2C, Auth0)
• Minimum of 2+ years experience with Infrastructure as code automation and deployment frameworks like Terraform
• Must have experience with using systems monitoring software
• Must have experience with cost optimization practices, monitoring and alerting overruns, ways to scale up and down IaaS autonomously
• Must have the ability to communicate complex technical problems concisely and professionally to technical and non-technical audiences
• Understanding of or experience with backup software and recovery strategies and approaches for DR
• Knowledge of or experience with High Availability setups
• Knowledge of IaaS specific to healthcare (HIPAA certified components) and knowledge of HI Trust/SOC2
• Proven experience in leading teams or projects
• A good understanding of Incident Management, Configuration Management, and Operational efficiency preferred
• Has relentlessly high standards and loves to innovate and learn (is never satisfied with the status quo)

• Experience with Databricks or Snowflake
• FHIR (i.e., FHIR Works on AWS)
• Healthcare Data and Security
