Computational Scientist

Job Description
The Zhang lab (Broad Institute and MIT) is seeking to recruit a computational scientist to contribute to our on-going efforts to discover, characterize, and engineer novel natural systems for use in human cells.
The Zhang lab seeks to explore and study biological diversity to understand nature and discover systems and processes that may be harnessed through bioengineering for the improvement of human well-being. Previous examples of this include pioneering the use of microbial CRISPR-Cas systems for genome and transcriptome engineering, discovery and characterization of novel RNA-guided enzymes, and engineering endogenous human proteins for use as gene therapy delivery vectors. Collectively, our work encompasses many disciplines, including computational biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, biochemistry and structural biology, molecular biology, genomics, and bioengineering. Our lab is a fun, vibrant, fast-paced, results-driven, and collaborative environment.
We are looking for a talented and curious scientist to advance our efforts to identify and analyze novel natural systems. The ideal candidate will blend knowledge of evolutionary, structural, and molecular biology with a deep bench of computational experience. S/he will work as a team with current members of the Zhang lab to implement biological mining strategies and analyze novel systems, bringing to bear skills in coding, data science, bioinformatics, genomics, and protein structure. Familiarity with cloud computing, machine learning, and data visualization is desirable.
The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard offers an outstanding place to work. The workplace culture is diverse, dynamic, progressive, and supports a healthy work-life balance. To support this mission, the Zhang lab strives for a workplace culture that supports diversity, intellectual curiosity, flexibility, and integrity. Broad employees receive a generous benefits package (including a highly competitive salary, dental, vision and health insurance, retirement plan, and additional benefits) and a range of possibilities for career advancement. • Curate novel candidates and nominate candidates for downstream characterization
  • Stay current on the field and think deeply about creative new ways to have an impact
  • Contribute to the lab through teamwork and discussion
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MSc or PhD in a relevant field (e.g., computer science, molecular biology)
  • Mastery of programming basics (ideally bash and python)
  • Experience with remote homology detection on protein and RNA desired
  • Curiosity about hacking biological systems
  • Eager to work in a team and collaborate
  • Demonstrated scientific contributions to the field
  • Proven ability to efficiently and effectively solve problems
  • Outstanding clarity of thought in communications (written and oral)
