Director of Faculty Recognition and Awards

Position Overview

The Director of Faculty Recognition and Awards provides leadership at KU Lawrence-Edwards for programs, services and resources that support the application for external awards and recognition for the achievements of KU faculty researchers, scholars and creative artists.

This newly created position is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenured, unclassified professional appointment in the Office of Research, but working in close cooperation with central administrative units, the Office of Faculty Affairs, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and other schools and academic units.

The Director of Recognition and Awards and the Office of Research provide a campus-wide resource to help faculty pursue and earn external recognition for their research, scholarship, and creative activity. The position provides consultation and professional support for submitting external award nominations. Support is available to identify opportunities; assist with preparation of application materials; and coordinate and monitor the nomination process.

The position requires some work on campus; therefore, the workplace designation is hybrid and the position reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research.

Job Description

50% - Program Development
  • Lead and coordinate a data- and equity-informed strategy for increasing awards and recognition for KU faculty research, scholarship and creative activity, leveraging best practices from other institutions. Convene leadership from the Office of Research, the Office of Analytics, Institutional Research & Effectiveness (AIRE), the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Office of the Provost to plan and implement approaches.
  • Develop, in conjunction with senior leadership, metrics to be used to monitor efforts to recognize and reward faculty.
  • Identify strategies that assure equitable recognition for faculty from groups traditionally under-rewarded in academia.
  • Participate actively in national peer groups focused on supporting faculty recognition/honorific awards to learn and share best practices and effective strategies.
  • Develop training/educational materials to facilitate the use of available data by school, department and center leadership to identify potential nominees for honorific awards appropriate for their current career stage and to lay the groundwork for future, more prestigious awards.
  • Develop and periodically update institution-wide lists for faculty nominations for review by campus leadership.
  • Develop guidance/templates for preparing nomination packets and soliciting supporting letters and documentation.
  • Provide advice to nominators and nominees as needed throughout the process, including follow-up on unsuccessful nominations.

30% - Administration and Collaboration
  • Maintain database of potential nominees and target awards, currently active nominations, target nominations and prepare reports as requested.
  • Act as coordinator for nominations for the most prestigious external awards for research, scholarship and creative activity, actively supporting the nomination process in partnership with appropriate unit leaders and faculty experts.
  • Coordinate with Associate Deans or other designated unit officials responsible for honorific awards/recognition to enable them to be active partners in creating a culture that supports recognition and celebration of faculty achievement.

15% - Event Planning/Outreach/Communications
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with deans and other academic unit leadership, center directors, Faculty Senate, Office of the Chancellor and KU Medical Center to explain strategy and build partnerships to help identify potential award opportunities and nominees.
  • Work closely with academic units and university administration to design events communications, and online venues to highlight and celebrate awardees, and identify opportunities to showcase awardees through KU Athletics, the Alumni Association, and through venues such as the Welcome Center.

5% - Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years’ experience managing multiple priorities in a complex environment and building collaborative relationships with diverse groups as demonstrated through previous work experience.
  • Computer skills sufficient to carry out the duties required of the position, including Microsoft Office, presentation software, communication tools, spreadsheets, data visualization, and internet applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.
  • Previous project management experience demonstrating the coordination and completion of projects on time.
  • Demonstrated diplomacy, professionalism, and ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to plan strategically and to assemble and facilitate collaboratively with faculty and administration.
  • Knowledge of prestigious award programs nationally and internationally.
  • Experience in analyzing submission requirements and preparing nominations, and the ability to identify new opportunities.
  • Evidence of having achieved a positive impact in a previous role, for example statistics tracking faculty awards and recognitions.
