Job Description

As Assistant Camp Director, you’ll work closely and collaborate with the Camp Director to oversee daily camp operations, support staff, and ensure a joyful, safe, and inclusive experience for all campers. Serving as the “manager on duty” when necessary, you’ll balance camper safety, program quality, and a positive camp environment while building strong relationships with families and the camp team. This role offers an exciting opportunity for individuals eager to develop their leadership and management skills in a hands-on, dynamic setting. This is a seasonal role; Assistant Camp Directors work Monday - Friday (5 days per week), and can work either full-time or part-time hours depending on the needs of each camp location. 

Core Responsibilities

Oversee Daily Camp Operations:

  • Collaborate closely with the Camp Director to ensure a safe, joy-filled program.

  • Use creative problem-solving to prioritize daily tasks effectively and maintain camper safety.

  • Act as the “manager on duty” in the Camp Director’s absence, supporting a seamless camp experience.

  • Own daily operational and administrative tasks to ensure smooth program execution.

  • Perform keyholder duties, handling opening and closing procedures as scheduled.

Provide Exceptional Customer Service:

  • Communicate with families about camper experiences and coach staff on effective, professional communication.

  • Address escalated concerns, assisting staff as needed to ensure positive resolutions.

  • Create a safe, fun, and engaging environment by balancing camper safety, operational needs, and staff support.

  • Balance fun with safety and operational excellence, coaching staff to engage with campers of all ages and abilities.

Collaborate in Team Management and Staff Support:

  • Support the Camp Director in leading and coaching the camp team, with direct supervision of Extended Care staff.

  • Ability to facilitate dialogue among diverse groups, promoting understanding and collaboration, and supporting individuals in taking responsibility for their actions.

Support Camp Programming and Rotations:

  • Flexibly assist with managing camp rotations and cover duties as needed, stepping in to lead camper groups or facilitate curriculum.

  • Facilitate check-in/check-out procedures for efficient and accurate attendance tracking.

  • Ensure high-quality implementation of Galileo curriculum, providing timely feedback to instructors.

Contribute to and Lead Camper-Centered Focus Activities:

  • Lead by example, participating in camp activities, chants, songs, and skits to promote a vibrant camp spirit and exemplary customer service.

  • Create a safe, fun, and engaging environment by balancing camper safety, operational needs, and staff support.

  • Balance fun with safety and operational excellence, coaching staff to engage with campers of all ages and abilities.

Manage Extended Care Program:

  • Independently direct the Extended Care program that is attended by campers before and after standard camp hours.

  • Manage and plan activities, training and execution of camp programming. 

  • Act as “manager on duty,” focusing on camper and family experience, staff development, and program quality.

Compensation

At Galileo, we are committed to pay transparency and equity. We anticipate the compensation for this position to be $22.50 per hour for new (first-year) camp staff. Your exact pay rate will be determined based on a variety of factors, including work location and tenure.

Returning (alumni) staff pay for this role ranges from $22.75 per hour (second-year) to $23.50 per hour (fifth-year), based on tenure with Galileo Camps.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of work experience in K-8 youth programming, education, or a combination of relevant education and work experience

  • 1+  years of demonstrated leadership experience, supervisor experience is preferred

  • Experience caring for, supervising, coaching, and/or mentoring children in groups of 15+

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus, but not required

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks while working with a sense of urgency and enthusiasm.

  • Ability to complete all pre-camp tasks, including background checks, state-mandated certifications, electronic onboarding paperwork and online training prior to the start of camp.

  • Valid CPR/First Aid certification OR ability to become certified prior to the start of camp

  • Availability to work Monday - Friday, for the duration of camp. 

    • Required to be available to work a minimum of 4 continuous weeks overlapping with the dates of camp operation

    • Priority is given to those who are able to commit to working for the full duration of camp (4-8 continuous weeks, depending on the camp location).

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by  May 12th, 2025

Schedule

All camps operate Monday - Friday. Shifts vary by position and location and can start as early as 7:00 a.m. and end as late as 6:30 p.m.

Staff must complete online training and attend two pre-camp set-up days before camp opens. Set-up days may be scheduled on weekends.
