Summer Program - Nurse

The Summer Program Nurse plays a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of participants and staff in the Summer Heads Up and Summer Sports Program. Serving as a primary health resource, provider, and coordinator, the nurse is responsible for evaluating, assessing, and following up on health concerns while ensuring wellness and safety protocols are in place. This position requires a proactive approach to managing health-related needs, from daily first aid and medication administration to emergency care and chronic condition management.


Key Responsibiltiies
  • Administering first aid and medications as needed to students and staff.
  • Reviewing and collecting health records through the Electronic Health Record (EHR) platform to ensure all necessary medical documentation is in place before programming begins.
  • Providing phone and email communication with families before the program start date to obtain required paperwork for allergies, medications, and medical interventions.
  • Interact with parents via phone and email to share health updates, address concerns, and provide information regarding their student’s health status during the program.
  • Running reports and reviewing chronic health conditions, including anaphylaxis, emergency contacts, and over-the-counter approved medications for participants and staff.
  • Managing cases for students with chronic health conditions and providing training for staff on seizures, life-threatening allergies, diabetes, asthma, and other health concerns.
  • Coordinating with the Alameda County Public Health Department in cases of communicable disease outbreaks and facilitating necessary notifications.
  • Maintaining up-to-date EpiPen and Naloxone stations and staying informed on the Emergency Preparedness Plan Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team—including counselors, faculty, and administrative staff—to ensure comprehensive care for students.
  • Assisting with research and data collection efforts related to school and program health.


Qualifications
  • To be successful in this position, candidates must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and a current California
  • Registered Nurse license, along with valid CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Previous clinical nursing or school nurse experience is required, with teaching and school-based experience highly preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills, managing multiple priorities, and excellent communication are essential, particularly in coordinating with families, staff, and external agencies.
  • The physical demands of this position include the ability to lift up to 30 pounds, push a patient in a wheelchair, and navigate the campus, including stairs and slopes.
  • The nurse should be able to sit or stand for extended periods and be comfortable assisting students by kneeling or crouching as needed.
  • The Summer Program Nurse is integral to the Heads Up and Summer Sports Program team, ensuring students and staff have a safe and healthy learning environment. Through direct care, policy development, training, and collaboration, this role contributes to the overall success of the program and the well-being of its community.


$70 - $70 an hour
On-site required.
Dates: June 9, 2025 to July 11, 2025 (Onboarding: June 9-14, 2025 )
Working Hours: June 16-June 27: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM; 
June 30-July 11: 8:00AM - 3:30PM

About the Heads Up Program: Founded in 1987, the Heads Up Program partners with the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and Head-Royce School. We run a year-round academic enrichment program on our campus that has served more than 1,000 low-income youth from Oakland. The mission of Heads Up is to provide first-generation college-bound students of color from Oakland public schools with challenging and enriching programming to cultivate socially responsible leaders.


About the HRS Summer Sports Program: The HRS Summer Sports Program consists of three individual sports camps - AM basketball, a swim lesson, and PM soccer - intended to provide students with a well-rounded day of athletic activities. Now in its second year, students have the opportunity to build bonds with peers while refining their skills in a variety of sports.
