Critical Care Technician - Emergency Department

Job Description:

The Critical Care Technician functions as a clinical support partner in the Critical Care and Emergency Department settings. They assist the patient care team in the performance of various tasks and procedures for the critically ill patient or patients requiring special skills or observation. Act under the direction and supervision of appropriate clinical licensed personnel.

Primary Children’s Hospital Emergency Department is a 34 bed Level I Trauma Center, caring for children in a 5 state radius (Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Montana – do we want to leave the states in or remove?).  We serve and care for children whose ages range from infancy to 21 years of age. Primary Children's Hospital is a Magnet designated facility for nursing excellence.

We specialize in a variety of children’s health issues including trauma, congenital anomalies, and common childhood illness. We have a terrific and engaged team to work with including: Physicians, Fellows, Advanced Practice Providers, RN’s, Critical Care Techs, and Health Unit Coordinators.  We are also fortunate to have a pharmacist, respiratory therapist, and child life staff in the ED as a resource to us at all times.  Our Life Flight services transport patients to our ED, which brings the most critical patients to our hospital to entrust in our care.

We work together as a team and our culture is one of excellence, positivity, comradery, and safety.  Our RN’s and Critical Care Techs are given extensive orientation to prepare them to succeed as an Emergency Department caregiver.  The department is fast paced and therefore can be stressful at times.   This requires a good balance between work and personal life.  We have a variety of shift options including: days, nights, and mid-shifts.  This will ensure a work/life balance, and so you can get out an enjoy what you love doing outside of work.  Utah has much to offer year round for the outdoor enthusiasts including summer and winter activities.

Hours: Full Time - 36 hours/week

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current CNA Certification in state of Utah, or EMT or Paramedic Certification in state of practice.
  • Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.


Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of CNA, EMT, Paramedic, or MA experience or other applicable healthcare experience.
  • Current enrollment in nursing school.
  • Basic computer skills.

Physical Requirements:

Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.

Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.

Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.

Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).

May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
