The University Libraries’ Strategic Technologies’ department is beginning a program to improve our initiative to create a more diverse and inclusive environment. This program has created a position for a student whose gender, race, ethnic, cultural, and/or national background contribute to the diversity of the Information Technology field. The position will start as a one-year paid internship and then transition into two years of professional employment with the Libraries’ Strategic Technologies’ team. The internship will take place during the student’s senior year of college with the expectation that upon successful completion of the internship and graduation they will work for the University Libraries in the Libraries’ Strategic Technologies department for two years. The two-year fixed term appointment will be benefits-eligible employment. During the internship, which pays for 10-20 hours a week during the semester, the student will rotate among various teams within Strategic Technologies (i.e. Software Development, Infrastructure and automation, End User Computing, etc.) to gauge the student’s interest, capabilities, and priorities for the team they will work with during their two-year employment within the unit.
Job Duties:
The student will get an opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with IT professionals that have experience in test-driven software development, continuous integration, automation, and orchestration of infrastructure, personal workstation support and project management. This will give a student who has been learning about these concepts in the classroom an opportunity to get hands-on experience with these tools in a professional environment and go from theory to application. Furthermore, the student will be assigned a mentor within Libraries Strategic Technologies to provide guidance and support throughout the program duration. At the end of the three years the student will have a stronger resume and a portfolio that includes a number of highly desired skillsets to advance their IT career, whether it’s in Software Development, DevOps, User Support, or Project Management in virtually any industry.
