Juvenile Probation Officer

Description of essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Probation officer will provide juvenile intake/probation services to youth and families in Canadian County.
  • Probation officer will provide transportation of juveniles as ordered by the district court judge or as directed by supervisory staff.
  • Probation officer will provide detention screenings using the detention risk assessment when juveniles are arrested by law enforcement and placement in detention is requested.
  • Probation officer will provide intervention services to youth and families and make referrals for services as necessary.
  • Probation officer will be available to assist in the courtroom to maintain order and ensure efficiency for juvenile court dockets.
  • Probation officer will supervise and ensure the area containing the holding cells outside the courtroom are maintained and will monitor, supervise and transport any juvenile placed in this area to ensure the health, safety, and security of clients and staff with sight checks being made at least every 15 minutes.
  • Probation officer will be on call and carry the on-call cell phone on a rotating basis. Probation officer will be responsible for the cell phone being operational with a fully-charged battery while on call. Probation officer will be available to provide transportation for detention residents if needed.
  • Probation officer will maintain a working cell phone at all times.
  • Probation officer will be at work 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and the Lunch break will be from noon until 1:00 p.m., unless other provisions have been agreed upon. Any changes must be approved by the supervisor in advance.
  • If unable to report to work, probation officer will speak directly to the Director of Juvenile Probation as to reason for absence prior to the time that you are required to report for duty.
  • Probation officer will have all JOLTS screens updated for each and every client by Friday at 5:00pm of each week.
  • Probation officer must maintain compliance with funding sources by assuring that proper paperwork and note entries are entered into appropriate databases in a timely manner and by established deadlines.
  • Probation officer will coordinate with other departments, agencies and parents to ensure juveniles who are placed in residential programs and who are involved with the bureau have all medical needs and supplies as well as all other needed supplies such as clothing, schoolwork, etc.
  • Probation officer will coordinate with other departments, agencies and parents to ensure they have all needed information and documentation on juveniles who are involved with the bureau.
  • Probation officer will contact each juvenile assigned to him/her at least one time a week by phone and once a month face to face either in the office, during a home visit or in the community.
  • Probation officer will complete any other duties as directed by the Director of Juvenile Probation.

  • Coordinate Graduated Sanctions Program
  • Coordinate Intensive Supervision Program
  • Coordinate Community Service Program
  • Coordinate Orientation to Juvenile Justice
  • Coordinate Summer Program
  • Provide Intake Service and follow up with Assistant District Attorney, client, and referring source
  • Assess the needs of the community and develop appropriate programs when possible
  • Attend all meetings as required by the department, center administration, and county officials.

Qualifications for position:

  • Qualified applicant shall possess a bachelor’s degree; preference will be given to applicants with a human services-related major.
  • Must pass a background check, drug, and alcohol screening.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and provide driving record and proof of automobile liability insurance.
  • Must provide three letters of reference.

Supervisory relationships:

This position reports directly to the Director of Juvenile Bureau Probation

Skills and knowledge required:

Individual should possess knowledge of adolescent development and be able to relate well to youth and their families. Individuals should have good time management and organizational skills.

Prior experience required: Related work experience is a plus but not a requirement.

Personal qualities: Be committed to working with a diverse staff and clientele. Must be committed to professional development and application of newly-acquired relevant knowledge to work with staff and clients.

Amount of travel and other special conditions or requirements:

The Probation Officer provides services in a variety of settings in the County, including clients’ homes, at the Center and within the community as needed. Position requires some travel to perform their normal duties and to attend required trainings.

Work Schedule:

Required 40 hour work week. Monday through Friday from 8:00a.m.- 5:00pm with lunch from 12:00pm to 1:00pm unless other arrangements are made with the Director of Juvenile Probation.
