Underwriting Manager
North American Bancard - Remote
Please note that this role requires direct underwriting experience in the merchant payment processing space with strong financial analysis ability.
The primary focus of the remote Underwriting Manager is to facilitate the merchant underwriting workflow, including all aspects of production related processes, escalated underwriting issues, and staff related concerns. The Underwriting Manager is expected to be well versed in company underwriting policy and procedures, comfortable in a fast-paced environment, comfortable in a leadership role, and understands that leading by example is an essential component of the department’s continued success.
The Underwriting Manager must be a qualified, motivated and experienced merchant credit underwriter in the payment processing space with management experience. This hand-on role reviews, analyzes and makes confident decisions on accounts with over $250,000 in total exposure, while using exceptional managerial skills for communicating and motivating a team.
What you will be doing:

Act as the key manager and assist the Underwriting Director by providing coverage for diverse department responsibilities under the Director which include:

underwriting department management and credit policy adherence

underwriting account disposition
-
escalations originating from multiple departments
-
high volume merchant reviews
-
workouts/risk event management
-
Coaching and developing team members; identifying promotion and growth opportunities for staff; executing progressive discipline.

Handle initial supervisor/escalation calls or emails with exposure amounts over $250,000 as received from any of our internal or external customers, and make recommendations to the Underwriting leadership team.

Provide all sales partners with a communication channel via phone support as well as an additional layer of review and discretion to find a solution for accounts that have been pended, declined, or withdrawn, these smart exceptions should lead to more approvals.

Analyze a wide variety of applicants and business types in multiple credit card processing environments (both card present and non-card present such as mail order or internet applicants where risk is higher), wide range of processing amounts, standard and non-standard documentation, and financial statements.

Conduct financial analysis and provide detailed recommendations, discussion papers, and creative risk mitigation strategies.

Review and make recommendations to department policies and procedures based on changing industry trends or process adjustments.

Execute against Credit Policy driven collateral strategies to minimize losses by implementing reserves, sourcing letters of credit and/or administering funding holds.
What we need from you:

Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting (or equivalent work experience)

5+ years commercial underwriting experience

2+ Years leading a team in the Merchant Payments industry
