Leveraged Lending Vice President

Overview:

This position drives the marketing efforts and execution of leveraged finance mandates for the Financial Sponsors Group.  Assists Managing Directors and Directors to structure, originate and execute transactions while working with partners including Debt Capital Markets and product-specific business lines, as well as the Middle Office, and various Credit, Risk and Operations teams. Secondary point of contact to external and internal clients. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with Private Equity Firms which both invest in Middle Market businesses in the M&T footprint & operate within M&T’s risk tolerance parameters to source loan opportunities for the Commercial Bank. 
  • Support Managing Directors and Directors with the generation, development, and execution of leveraged finance mandates in alignment with the overall strategy for the Financial Sponsors Group to support the expansion of the division and drive revenue growth. 
  • Act as a primary contact for designated financial sponsors, portfolio company clients, and bank counsel, participating in all relationship management activities from pitch meetings to routine check ins throughout the deal life cycle.
  • Oversee the preparation of deal or transaction materials such as term sheets, engagement letters, legal documentation, and credit approval memorandum.
  • Conduct research projects that relate to business valuations, transaction positioning and client value recommendations.
  • Maintain an excellent working knowledge of the overall economy and market conditions.
  • Edit deal materials to ensure the highest standards of accuracy and content.
  • Provide data and supporting process documentation for the development and enhancement of policies and procedures and ensure all activities conducted comply with bank Credit and Risk requirements.
  • Coordinate deal and transaction coverage and assignment, which includes applying a staffing framework previously agreed by senior management, autonomously. 
  • Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite.  Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
  • Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibilities:

Supports a defined product set, with a proven track record of sourcing mandates with positive revenue generation for a sustained period (3-5 years).  Demonstrates the ability to manage junior staff and monitor engagements to a successful completion.

The position requires extensive external (prospective customers) and internal (various Bank personnel) communication to fully perform responsibilities.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 7 years' work experience in Investment Banking, Leveraged Lending, or similar. Or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 11 years’ higher education and/or work experience. Minimum of 2 years leadership experience

Individual must be comfortable working in a fast paced, entrepreneurial environment and be able to handle a high-level of responsibility.

Experience in Leveraged Finance within capital markets and/or investment banking.

Strong analytical skills, including use of spreadsheets, graphing, and presentations with a detailed knowledge of financial models.

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all levels of Investment Bank and balance sheet lender personnel, including the Investment Bank Middle Office, and various Risk and Operations teams.

Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.

Education and Experience Preferred:

MBA and 7 years’ proven and progressive leveraged finance and capital markets roles, including a strong network of private equity relationships to enhance the business development efforts of the group.

Advanced degree or specialized banking designations or training a plus.                         

Physical Requirements:

Travel required.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $143,874.91 - $239,791.52 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
