*Busy Labor Unit with Flexible Hours & SIGN-ON BONUS*
The Patient Care Information Associate serves as the central source of information on the patient care unit interacting with patients, families and visitors; unit based staff; and clinical and clerical staff in all departments throughout the MGH. Additional responsibilities include transcription of physician orders and initiation of processes to fulfill those orders; communication and coordination of in-patient unit activity; clerical management of the patient record; and assistance with safety and security throughout the patient unit.
Under the general direction of the Nurse Director the PCIA serves as the central source of registration and information on the in-patient Labor & Delivery unit. Provides clerical and reception support function in TRIAGE, registers patient, coordinates admission and logs discharge of patient and transfer from Labor & Delivery Unit. Answers all telephone calls and responds accordingly. Candidate must be sensitive to patient needs and responsive to medical and nursing staff needs. Receives patients’ relatives and visitors and directs them to the appropriate individual(s). Effective interpersonal and communication skills are essential. Provides support as needed to all OB staff. Must have excellent customer service and organizational skills. Performs full registration functions and insurance verification.
1. Customer Service Promotes the philosophy that patients and their families are our primary customer. Directs patients, families, and staff to appropriate resource. Maintains effective working relationship with unit staff, other departments and providers of unit services.
2. Admitting and Registration Functions Registers outpatients, inpatients and bedded outpatients utilizing the PATCOM or PCIS registration systems. Notes and documents status changes, insures that the assignment of benefits form is signed and processes the necessary paperwork. Manages both planned and unplanned visits.
3. Discharge Functions Answers all telephone calls related to scheduling, insurance company approvals, continuances, and/or details for patient's follow-up visits. Reschedules patients as necessary.
4. Communications Receives, organizes, and manages information sources. Performs secretarial functions of the assigned unit including telephones, internal and external paging, patient call system, and computer entry and retrieval. Communicates and relays relevant information to staff within the unit and to other departments as required. Responsible for seeking assistance in problem resolution. Maximizes information exchanges and minimizes the interruption of patient care.
5. Patient Record Provides transcription of patient orders.
6. Materials Management Obtains from other departments the supplies, equipment, materials and services requested for the provision of patient care requirements.
7. General Independently completes ongoing and special projects as assigned. Performs typing, xeroxing, collation, and document filing as required.
8. Management Systems Participates in the orientation of staff. Participates in implementation of policies, procedures and systems. Contributes to the generation of management information as directed.
9. Self Development Collaborates with the Operations Manager to identify and meet learning needs. Adheres to requirements for required training.
