Marketplace Policy Lead

Creators can offer paid memberships that unlock access to exclusive work and community, or sell individual digital items from their own Patreon shops.

We’re continuing to invest heavily in building the best creator tools with the best team in the creator economy, and are looking for a Marketplace Policy Lead to support our mission.

This role is based in New York, San Francisco or Remote.

About the Role:

As the Marketplace Policy Lead at Patreon, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and maintaining the integrity of our digital commerce platform. In this position, you will:

  • Policy Development and Implementation: Work cross-functionally to create and update policies that support the sale of digital and physical goods, services, and various software types, while also ensuring a creator-first approach to protecting creator-led communities.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with our Product, Legal, Community, Engineering, and Trust & Safety teams, as well as our creator communities, to develop policy solutions, ensure consistent enforcement, and address emerging challenges.

  • Research and Benchmarking: Stay ahead of industry trends, competitor practices, and global regulations to ensure Patreon's policies set industry-leading standards.

  • Product Influence: Partner with product teams to integrate policy considerations into the product development process, enhancing user safety and experience.

  • Education and Training: Develop guidance and best practices for creators on how to maintain a.

  • Creator Policy and Product Engagement: Engage with creators to gather input and incorporate their perspectives into product and policy development.

  • Build External Narratives: Collaborate with our product marketing teams to communicate product and policy developments to external audiences.

Your contributions will directly impact the velocity and quality of our policy development, enhance content safety, and reduce regulatory and reputational risks as we continue to grow as a content and community platform.

About You:

You are a seasoned policy professional with at least 8-10 years of experience, with a significant focus on developing and implementing policies for ecommerce marketplaces. In this role, you will:

  • Navigate Complex Regulatory Environments: Utilize your expertise to address the complexities of digital commerce and mitigate associated risks.

  • Lead Policy Development: Demonstrate your ability to spearhead the creation and implementation of policies that effectively address product and marketing risks.

  • Exhibit Excellent Writing Skills: Showcase your ability to articulate policies and guidelines with clarity and precision.

  • Employ a Strategic Problem-Solving Approach: Develop comprehensive frameworks and playbooks to tackle broader challenges of marketplace governance.

  • Shape the Future of Patreon's Marketplace: Be motivated by the opportunity to ensure Patreon remains a safe and thriving platform for creators and patrons.

Skills and Experience You Possess:

  • At least 5+ years of experience working on marketplace policy, public policy, or a related field.

  • A strong understanding of online safety, online marketplaces, and the creator economy.

  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally and influence product and operational decisions.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Passion for protecting and empowering creators and their communities.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex, fast-paced, and ambiguous situations with a solution-oriented mindset.

Projects You May Work On:

  • Developing policies to support digital commerce, off-platform.

  • Designing policies to address major regulatory or commercial risks to Patreon.

  • Streamlining internal policy operationalization and tooling processes in coordination with our Content Safety team.
