PKH is a nonprofit ed tech company designed to help the University of North Carolina System grow the number of adult learners through online delivery at the undergraduate level. We are equipping universities within the UNC System with best-in-class technology, processes, and student support solutions so they can better compete with out-of-state, online universities. 


The Role

The Payroll and Benefits Manager recommends, implements, and administers benefit and 401k programs, oversees payroll, and ensures compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.



Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Areas of oversight include Benefits, Payroll, 401k
  • Works closely with the internal finance team to conduct bi-weekly payroll reviews and audits
  • Collaborates with external benefit consultants to identify and evaluate benefit plan designs, perform cost analyses, and review funding alternatives. Prepares proposals for management review and consideration
  • Communicates benefit plan provisions to employees; maintains and issues plan documents and performs benefit orientations
  • Primary contact for all Paylocity related tax withholding matters, including state registrations, communication with the tax team, and addressing tax notices
  • Oversees administration of the employee benefit plans including flexible spending accounts, medical, dental, vision, long term disability, life insurance, and voluntary benefits
  • Manages third-party vendors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements
  • Oversees payroll function, establishing internal processes that ensure the integrity of all payroll-related transactions
  • Administers pay practices, time and attendance policies and PTO plan and validates compliance to and consistency in application
  • Ensures users have appropriate access and support navigating HRIS systems; develops and delivers HRIS system training to meet the needs of the company
  • Collaborates with People Operations members to provide quality service to business partners


What You Bring
  • 4 years of relevant experience in payroll, benefits, and 401k administration
  • In-depth knowledge of Payroll- multistate payroll experience
  • In-depth knowledge of SIT and SUI registrations and compliance
  • In-depth knowledge of Fair Labor Standards Act, ERISA, COBRA, ACA, EEO and other relevant federal regulations
  • Experience with HRIS or Payroll Platforms
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks against tight deadlines
  • Must maintain confidential and secure sensitive information
  • Experience in defining system solutions, automation of work processes. High attention to detail and strong organizational skills, planning and time-management skills
  • Requires excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Must have demonstrated ability to successfully establish effective interpersonal relationships with a variety of management and staff and work independently toward project deliverables
  • Ability to work independently and manage projects to their successful conclusion
  • Must be proficient in use of Microsoft Office suite of products, with advanced skills in Excel

Preferred, But Not Required:
  • Administrator or user of Paylocity preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources or business administration is preferred


$90,000 - $100,000 a year
