World News Editor - Express

Company Description

The Express is looking for a World News Editor to lead our international news coverage both online and in print. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a vital role within our newsroom. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record at delivering brilliant exclusives, fascinating features and fantastic page views in equal measure. 

Working with the Head of News and Head of Features, you will be full of ideas for agenda-setting stories and instinctively know how to drive the big stories of each day forward and how to drive as many readers as possible to them. 

You will be equally adept at covering everything from the war in Ukraine to over-tourism in Tenerife - all in a way that differentiates us from our rivals. You will be managing a talented team of reporters and constantly coming up with ideas for both them and other members of our wider team. 

You will ideally have newsdesk experience on a national website or paper, agency or a busy regional title and have strong organisational, managerial and people skills. A deep knowledge of and passion for world affairs is absolutely essential. 

We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds, and we want you to tell us the stories you believe are important from our many communities so we can continue to diversify our content. 

This role is home and hub-based linked to our London Canary Wharf hub. We are therefore open to candidates based in and around London. 

Job Description

What will the role involve? 

  • Working with newsdesk and reporters to generate traffic-driving ideas and exclusives 
  • Helping manage a team of reporters to cover the stories that matter - from breaking news to investigations and features 
  • Finding and developing stories that will appeal to Express readers both online and in print 
  • Liaising with freelance reporters across the globe to establish a network of contributors 
  • Understanding audience analytics and the use of stats to dictate how we headline stories and how we shape newslists 
  • Balancing the biggest hard news stories of each day with lighter trivia pieces and features which will generate a large audience at weekends and on quiet news days 
  • Being willing to work evenings, weekends and overnight shifts when required 
  • Ensuring that copy, where required, is adapted to the right standard required for our papers 
  • Editing and managing copy to tight deadlines ensuring accuracy

Qualifications

Who are we looking for? 

  • NCTJ or equivalent journalism degree and knowledge of media law
  • Have a strong understanding of the unique nature of digital news
  • An excellent knowledge of world affairs and a passion for global news
  • Have an eye for detail to bring stories to life
  • Know how to manage and inspire a team 
  • Be a good motivator
  • Have excellent contacts
  • Be able to work calmly and effectively under pressure
  • Have excellent legal and IPSO knowledge
  • Knowledge of foreign languages is an advantage
