The Gratz Lab at Reed College in Portland, Oregon seeks a highly-detailed, research-focused person to join the group as a Research Assistant. The candidate will contribute to atmospheric chemistry and air quality research projects that primarily focus on continuous measurements from high elevation, remote background stations in the western U.S. Familiarity with operating continuous atmospheric chemical measurement systems, as well as performing statistical and meteorological analyses of large datasets is strongly preferred. The Research Assistant will support regular lab and field operations throughout the year, perform independent data analyses, and contribute to the dissemination of project findings.

Who You Are

  • You have familiarity with, and/or direct experience in, the operation of continuous measurement systems for atmospheric pollutants, such as ozone, particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and/or mercury

  • You have experience working in laboratory spaces containing chemical compounds and sensitive equipment, familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and commitment to following clean handling procedures

  • You are comfortable managing large datasets

  • You have experience with statistical analysis using software such as Microsoft Excel, SPSS, and/or R

  • You are able to work independently

  • You have an interest in mentoring undergraduate students, and contributing to the larger research process from study design to dissemination of results

What You’ll Do

  • Assist the faculty member in setting up, testing, and managing daily operations of atmospheric and environmental chemistry equipment in their lab space, including continuous gas analyzers for ambient air measurements, and discrete sample analyzers for mercury in aqueous or solid mediums

  • Participate in the deployment of field-based measurement systems for the study of local and regional air pollution; may require travel to regional field sites and spending time at high elevation

  • Perform statistical and graphical analysis of atmospheric chemistry measurement data related to the faculty member’s research projects

  • Contribute to the preparation of conference presentations and manuscripts related to the faculty member’s research

  • Train and mentor undergraduate research students in the faculty member’s laboratory

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or related field

  • Experience working in laboratory and/or field settings with atmospheric chemistry research
