Research Assitant

We are seeking a Research Assistant who will serve as a green infrastructure expert for multiple Baltimore-focused climate resilience projects. They will serve as the primary expert on greening strategies and tree care, working with both academic project partners and community members to co-design greening strategies and evaluate the effectiveness of existing green infrastructure in Baltimore.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Write summaries of greening projects and their environmental impacts for use on websites and other communications materials.
Coordinate citizen scientist volunteers on data collection campaigns.
Collect and evaluate data from environmental sensor networks.
Install environmental sensors to greening sites in Baltimore City.
Participate in public-facing events to explain urban greening strategies and benefits.
Develop and present greening plans for neighborhoods in Baltimore City.

Special Knowledge, Sills & Abilities

Familiarity with Baltimore neighborhoods and neighborhood groups.

A record of successful work on urban greening.

Familiarity with Baltimore City rules and regulations that apply to green infrastructure projects.

Proficiency in standard office software and spreadsheets.

Strong oral communication skills and ability to work with Baltimore community members.

Expertise in landscaping and tree care, especially in the urban context.

Ability to work independently and with others.

Ability and willingness to work outdoors at times.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduate level coursework on ecology, environmental science, urban planning, or landscape architecture.
Some experience in landscaping and urban greening.

Starting Salary Range: Min $16.75 - Max $29.30 HRLY ($32,665 budgeted; Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
