Summary:
The Research Associate - Grape Phenotype will assist with research and development related to the breeding, evaluation and commercialization of new wine grape varieties with improved yield and fruit quality characteristics. Under the supervision of grape genetic scientists and viticulture research field personnel, the individual will be responsible for the implementation of and reporting from phenotyping and genetics experiments, research, and analysis to support grapevine yield improvement through breeding and selection.
What You Will Do:
- Collect detailed phenotype information of yield, yield components, fruit quality and other assigned phenotypic traits and characteristics from grapevines and their parts in vineyard, laboratory, and other settings.
- Assist with the use of computer, imaging, AI, and related technologies to measure grapevine yield components.
- Examine grapevines and grapevine populations to estimate yield and yield components from proximal and remote sensing technologies.
- Accurately collect and record field data related to vine yield, growth and fruit quality evaluations.
- Prepare data summaries and preliminary analyses of field trials and germplasm evaluations.
- Fully and accurately execute research plans and experimental protocols that contribute to the improvement of grape germplasm.
- Maintain field and laboratory research notebooks and other breeding records to scientific, industry, regulatory, and legal standards.
- Maintain a safe work environment and conduct work in accordance with good laboratory practices and safety guidelines.
- Ensure the protection of company intellectual property.
- Report on project status and timelines through oral and written communication as requested.
- Understand and comply with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations.
- Must maintain satisfactory attendance, to include timeliness.

What You Will Need:
- Bachelor of Science in Plant Breeding, Biology, Genetics, Plant Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, Viticulture, or Agriculture.
- Able to use MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint at the intermediate level.
- Experience in accurately executing established scientific protocols and instructions.
- Ability to apply simple logical and scientific method to a wide range of practical problems.
- Experience dealing with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.).
- Experience in working on projects requiring cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrate positive and cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.
- Required to possess specific vision abilities (color vision).
- Valid California Driver’s License (must obtain within 30 days of hire).
- Required to travel to company offices, sites, and/or meeting locations for onboarding, training, meetings, and events for development, department needs, and business delivery up to 5% of the time, with or without reasonable accommodation. This may be in addition to travel requirements, if applicable, as listed in this job description.
What Will Set You Apart:
- MS in Plant Breeding, Biology, Genetics, Plant Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, Viticulture, or Agriculture or BS plus 3 years of relevant work experience.
- Able to use image analysis software (for example, ImageJ) at the intermediate level.
Compensation:
- Hiring Hourly Range Posted: $25.70 - $42.88
- Actual compensation paid within the range will be determined by factors such as the education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
