Manager, Learner Progression

The Office of the Registrar at SAIT is an essential part of the student journey, the front line of student support from admissions to convocation. We are committed to informing and assisting our current and future students from initial inquiry through to graduation and employment.


The Opportunity


Reporting to the Associate Registrar, Learner Progression(LP), the Manager, Learner Progression is a key member of the Office of the Registrar (OTR)’s leadership team.  The incumbent supports a multifaceted, high paced environment and requires keen attention to policy and regulations. This individual will ensure that all initiatives, processes, and strategies are aligned with the department goals and are focused on excellence in student experience, fostering employee development,  drive enrolment growth and efficiency in processes.


This position is responsible for all aspects of the employee lifecycle for up to 20 AUPE staff including hiring, performance management up to and including termination. The ability to lead, coach, and motivate a team towards achieving department KPI’s will be required. As well, the Manager will identify areas for process improvement and lead initiatives to improve, streamline and create efficient processes that support both student success and staff success. Building relationships within the OTR and with strategic partners across the institution will be essential for success in this role. Embracing and embodying Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) concepts is required.


The demands and work volume associated with this position can be significant, particularly during peak periods occurring throughout the year (August, September, December and January). The ideal candidate will embrace change and thrive in a dynamic team environment. Standard hours of work for this position are 37.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday. Evening and weekend overtime maybe required to support occasional institutional initiatives.  There may be the opportunity for a hybrid of work on campus and remote work. The incumbent must live in Alberta and be available for on campus work on short notice.  


The Role
  • Managing staff - 35%
  • Leads a team of up to 20 individuals including performance goal setting 
  • Responsible for overall performance management process. Sets clear expectations with staff, motivating through goal setting, development and progression plans. Monitors progress on performance goals and provides timely feedback. 
  • Understands the collective agreements and managing in a unionized environment
  • Guides the development and deployment of training plans to front line staff in alignment with the student cycle 
  • Creates coordinated onboarding plans to train new staff in an organized cohesive manner to build confidence and staff retention
  • Develops and implements employee engagement initiatives to ensure a well functioning cohesive team to deliver excellent service
  • Develops and maintains a respectful and inclusive workplace

  • Project Coordination - 35%
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvement and enhancement of operations to support both students and staff
  • Makes recommendation and prepares briefing notes on policy and procedures that require updating
  • Engages in projects as a key stakeholder and subject matter expert in the office of the registrar
  • Performs environmental scans to determine best practices and approaches at other PSI’s and professional associations 
  • Excels in a multilayer decision making environment
  • Coordinates with the other managers in OTR to ensure coordination of efforts on projects and strategic direction goals
  • Implements full roll out of new initiatives to both the OTR and to the larger SAIT community
  • Comfortable speaking and presenting to small and  medium groups at SAIT

  • Additional competencies - 30%
  • A high level of judgement, decision making, and expertise with SAIT policies will be required to do in depth investigations into the student record and make discretionary decisions when required
  • Ability to analyze and synthesis data, and understand statistics will also be required
  • OTR is required to participate/coordinate a few events throughout the student cycle, including orientation, open house, convocation; this position will also play a part in facilitating participation in those events
  • Other duties as required 


Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum: 
  • Bachelor's degree from a recognized educational institute or equivalent experience
  • Five years related post-secondary experience 

  • Skills Required:
  • Strong leadership, training, and coaching skills
  • In-depth knowledge of the role of the registarial operations in a public post-secondary setting
  • Understand the importance of the integrity of the student record
  • Capable of developing and implementing policy in practice
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to interpret policy documents
  • Collaborative and able to build relationships with external stakeholders
  • Analytical and ensures best practices are being followed


Job classification: MANAGER - M1100

Salary range: $80,000 - $106,880.00

Paid Leave: 4 Weeks Vacation / 14 Flex Days per year
