The Role: Datacenter Research Analyst, US focused. This role will support the S&P Technology Media and Telecom Datacenter Services and Infrastructure analyst team in covering the trends and technologies driving the US datacenter markets.
Datacenter markets around the world continue to see explosive growth thanks to expansions of the hyperscale / cloud providers. Increasingly these expansions will be to accommodate artificial intelligence type hardware (GPU-based compute) as well as other compute types. While this growth has been exciting to watch, it also raises questions about the long-term sustainability of the energy demand and its impacts on local power grids, as well as the communities surrounding the datacenter developments. We are seeking a dynamic researcher to help further our coverage of this critically important segment.
Responsibilities Impact:
451 Research’s Datacenter Services and Infrastructure team serves IT technology and services vendors, datacenter providers, service providers and their customers, the investment community, senior corporate leaders, IT practitioners and others. We provide insights on multiple topics from trends in the various datacenter markets, new technologies being adopted by datacenter providers, and the various sustainability issues facing the datacenter industry as a whole, to name a few. Our analysts help define and shape the markets they cover, as well as their clients’ strategies. Clients use our research when making investment and other key decisions.
This role will conduct industry analyst research on the datacenter market and its trends, working both independently and in collaboration within a geographically dispersed, global team.
The focus of coverage will center on trends in the various datacenter markets around the US. Specifically:
Assessing build pipelines to understand who is building what, and how big
Understanding pricing dynamics for the various colocation providers.
Understanding vacancy rates within a market and the various dynamics influencing this..
Writing is essential to this role and will include research and publication of both short (2-page) and long (10-25 page) reports on datacenter markets and providers, as well as on broader industry topics as relevant. Short reports will publish regularly and more frequently (approximately weekly); longer reports would be less frequent and planned in advance.
End-user survey work is a potentially important element of this role. We have dedicated a portion of our end-user survey capacity to the topic of datacenter infrastructure and services. The successful candidate will play a role in developing our on-going survey research with end-users and analyze and deliver research reports based on the results.
In addition to the above responsibilities, the successful candidate will:
Engage in briefings with key vendors and attend events (virtual, or other events contingent on travel conditions) focused on covered segments of the datacenter markets.
and explain industry trends.
Respond to inquiry requests from market vendors and enterprise users.
Contribute to custom advisory research projects.
Collaborate with fellow analysts on topics that cross practice boundaries, for example the impact of datacenters on power utilities.
