Division/Unit: Post-Conviction Justice Unit

Position Title: Senior Rackets Investigator

Salary Range: $73,290 - $77,133

Position Summary:
The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) has an opening for a Senior Rackets Investigator in its newly-formed Post-Conviction Justice Unit. The Senior Rackets Investigator is responsible for conducting and overseeing a caseload of investigations at various stages in the screening, reinvestigation, and report-writing process. The investigator will work with attorneys and analysts to determine which cases are appropriate for reinvestigation, and will help guide and conduct reinvestigations, including assisting in locating evidence for forensic testing, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing case materials.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Reinvestigate cases in which individuals prosecuted by the Manhattan DA’s Office claim they were unjustly convicted.
  • Collaborate with other members of the DA’s Office, and outside counsel, to develop and implement investigation plans.
  • Locate and interview witnesses including witnesses that are currently incarcerated or live out-of-state.
  • Locate and review other evidence, including physical or forensic evidence.
  • Testify in court proceedings if needed.
  • Review voluminous and complicated facts to ascertain their validity.
  • Prepare extensive and comprehensive narrative reports.
  • Work with and oversee junior investigators when appropriate.
  • Perform field visits to businesses, communities, and other contacts.
  • Use various City databases to perform background and information searches, such as: eJustice, IIS, IFCOM, Webcrims, Google, and various watchdog registries.
  • Work on special projects and tasks as assigned.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours.

Qualifications:

  • Experience investigating cases and interviewing witnesses
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficient in social media research
  • Willing to go on investigations after hours where needed
  • Must be willing to travel to New York State prisons, throughout the five boroughs, and out-of-state as needed.
  • Must have driver’s license and everyday access to a car for use in investigations
  • Prior law enforcement or criminal justice experience.
  • Ability to conduct confidential and sensitive investigations.
  • Strong attention to detail and high concern for data accuracy.
  • Dependable team player who works collaboratively and cooperatively with staff in a team-oriented environment.
  • Spanish language proficiency desired

Educational Requirements:

  • Graduation from high school or its equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in criminal justice, political science, sociology or a related field preferred.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Three (3) years of law enforcement experience, or equivalent investigative experience.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license.
  • As per NY Public Officers Law 2, §3-B, U.S. citizenship required.

Commitment:

  • Three (3) year commitment to the hiring bureau.
