About the Role
Springer Nature, the publisher of Nature, is looking to recruit an Associate or Senior Editor for Nature Synthesis.
Nature Synthesis (https://www.nature.com/natsynth/) publishes original research on all aspects of chemical and materials synthesis, as well as Editorials, Reviews, News & Views and Comment pieces on topics that are of interest to the broader community of researchers working in this area, both in academia and industry.
We’re looking for someone with a passion for science and the communication of science to join the Nature Synthesis editorial team as an Associate or Senior Editor. Working within a dynamic editorial and publishing environment that includes Nature Catalysis, Nature Chemistry and Nature Materials among others, the successful candidate will report to the Chief Editor of the journal.
This job is offered on a full-time, permanent basis and can be located in our New York, Shanghai or Beijing offices (hybrid working).
Role responsibilities:
Work closely within a small team of editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, management of the peer-review process, commissioning and editing of reviews and comments, and writing for the journal.
Make well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice.
Play an important role in influencing the representation of their fields in the journal and in representing the journal to the international research community.
Liaise extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature family and with experts in the international scientific community.
Attending conferences and visiting research institutions.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
Essential:
A PhD, or equivalent qualification, in synthetic chemistry or materials science. We are particularly interested in applicants with a research background in materials chemistry and with an interest in either electro/photocatalysis or energy materials.
A broad knowledge and understanding of the topics covered by Nature Synthesis.
The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline.
A collaborative mindset and good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well as part of the editorial team and other teams outside of Nature Synthesis as required.
The ability to communicate clearly and effectively; must be fluent in English (written and spoken).
Be eager to travel and meet scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.
Desirable:
Postdoctoral research experience is preferred but not essential.
Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for a Senior Editor position.
To apply please send the following:
A cover letter explaining your interest in the job, salary expectations and preferred office location.
A CV detailing your education, relevant employment history and any other achievements that you feel demonstrates your suitability for the position.
A 300-word Research Highlight in the style of Nature Synthesis covering a peer-reviewed research paper that has caught your attention recently. The paper you highlight should not be from your own (or previous) research group and should not have been published in Science or any Nature journal; it should be on a topic that you find interesting and exciting. The highlight should explain the significance and implications of the research to someone who is not a specialist in the subject.
The closing date for applications is May 2nd, 2025
