Mission Overview & Responsibilities: When news breaks, readers from around the world turn to The New York Times for trustworthy, authoritative coverage. Every day, journalists at The New York Times report more than 200 stories from dozens of countries around the world. Our journalism is consumed by over 100 million users each month. We are continuing to expand our deep investment in engineering and are looking for a Staff Engineer to join the Web Platforms team. You'll contribute to a vital team in an organization that values empathy, collaboration, transparency, diversity, and learning. You will report to Heather Daymon and work cross-functionally with engineers, designers, project managers, and product managers. The Web Platforms team enables the development of highly scalable, secure, sustainable, and consistent web products at NYT by delivering high quality full stack common components, libraries and frameworks, and by providing well-informed thought leadership on best practices around web application architecture and operations.


What You'll Do:


  • Translate business goals into practical technical solutions with realistic milestones
  • Organize and guide balanced decisions across your peers for architecture, design, and implementation details
  • Gather support on your technical strategy through collaborative discussions with adjacent teams and other partners
  • Create strategies for delivering new capabilities while paying down technical debt and investing in engineering excellence
  • Advise engineering management and product management on assessing technical complexity and resourcing needs
  • Support engineers in your team on architecture, development, testing, delivery, and operations
  • Mentor engineers to level up the group's abilities


 Basic Qualifications


  • Passion for web development
  • 6+ years full stack web engineering experience
  • Strong experience with TypeScript, one or more Node.JS frameworks (we use Express), and one or more frontend JavaScript frameworks/libraries (we use React)
  • Experience building and operating complex distributed systems at scale, in GCP and/or AWS, with an emphasis on resiliency
  • Experience with CI/CD techniques and tooling; e.g. Argo/Drone


Preferred Qualifications


  • Lean, DevSecOps, GitOps, etc.
  • Kanban or other agile methodologies


This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$160,000—$175,000 USD
